3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Location: Draft at Pony Bar, 2/22/14, as Captain Lawrence Black IPA, Palindromic Rating #3443
Aroma: The nose is a little roasty and a little hoppy, some citrus and pine
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a small head and some light lace
Flavor: The taste is much the same, balanced, roasty and a little bitter, and some earth
Palate: The body is medium, a decent feel, average carbonation, and a mid-dry finish
I’m thinking this must be the same beer? Anyway, I thought this was only a decent Black IPA. It’s plenty drinkable and plenty solid, but I think Captain Lawrence could have done better.

On tap at Barcade brooklyn. Hops are greater than the roast. Spot on for the style.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pouring at Captain Lawrence during their Election Day: Pilot Batch Takeover event. Pours a deep ruby brown with a thin to medium sized beige to tan head. Big spicy hops, citrus, toast, the nose is reminiscent of 5 Years Later (their imperial black IPA/Anniversary beer). Medium bodied, roast, chocolate, toast, citrus hops. Candied citrus. Nice spiciness partners well with a good amount of earthiness. Long roast and citrus into the finish. My favorite of the night, and looks like it won the election and will be remade. Good, I’d certainly like to drink more of this one.
