COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rum barrels are a new one for me. I’ve never tasted a beer that was aged in rum barrels before I tasted the same beer you have in your hands. And let me tell you, it was no easy task tracking down freshly emptied rum barrels and getting them up to the brewery. But I think you will agree it was worth the extra effort. To create this beer we took our Smoked Porter and let it slowly age in barrels that once held 12 year old Virgin Island rum. Straight form the Captain’s cellar to yours, we hope you enjoy.

sampled with the phoenix crew. provided by ’the one and only’ bockyhorsey... nice brown color with red tints and a tan head. lots of clumpy yeast. aroma of sugar cane (rum) and it’s sweetness, wood barrel, smoke and malt. the flavor is really rum-like but not hot or sweet... fruity, cane and smoky astringency before a very mildly sour finish. this is the most well balanced of the three...

Pours thin but black with a thin head. On the nose there are notes of smoke some charcoal some sweetness and some chocolate and coffee. On the palate the sweetness is mostly cut by the smokiness. Yum! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from tap room. Pours black with an inch of khaki foam. Prominent rum notes on the nose and the tongue. Didn’t get much of the smoked porter action. Finish lingers a bit. Solid.

Bottle - pours cola with quite a bit of white head. Aroma is big, dominated by the rum and smoke. Taste is sweet with the bite of the alcohol on the finish. Solid.

Bottle released in March 2013. Poured a deep black cola with a large tan head and some of the most intense lacing that I have seen. Aroma includes notes of rum, dark chocolate, and slight smokiness. Taste begins with dark fruit, oak, and rum followed by bakers chocolate and roasted malt with some booziness on the finish. Enjoyable mouthfeel with oaky rum flavor lingering.

All four variants of Smoke From The Oak served side by side at my tasting on May 29, 2010. Thanks to Pete, Chris, and Brad for supplying the bottles. Review is from notes. This beer is a dark brown color. It has a decent sized head that fades quickly leaving very little lacing. Aromas are smoke, oak (go figure), and slightly sweet liquor. The flavor is pretty nice. This beer tastes alright, but is my least favorite of the Smoke From The Oak line. The beer was sour, but not overly so. There is some noticeable heat in the finish. Although, I would drink this again, I wasn’t especially impressed by any of the Smoke From The Oak lineup.

Bottle. Full of alcohol and smoke in he aroma. The taste is more smoke than anything and a little over powering. Finishes cleaner than expected. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle:   Deep cola, HUGE foamy beige head, almost to the point that I think this beer is infected because the bottle just ooozes foam.   Otherwise sticky lacing.   Tart nose, roasted malts, lactose sweetness, barrel aging... can’t really tell that this is Rum.   Very warming tho.   Spritzy on the tongue, and not infected as I thought based on the foam.   Minor campfire as well.   Tart, yet smokey.   Faint Rum aspects.   Its rather nice that its not dominating.   Woody for sure, but also a little lactic.   Could stand to be heavier/maltier.   Fairly airy... burp.   Dry finish.   Body and mouthfeel are full to moderate.   This is a Porter right?   Could almost pass as a dark Sour of sorts.   Definitely interesting.

Bottle shared by someone at freetail release. Pours black withba coffee brown head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has notes of sweet dark grains with heavy notes of smoke and a hint of rum. Flavor begins with smoked dark grains with a bit of rum in the finish.

Bottle generously shared at the RBSG grand tasting. Pours like dark chocolate. Intense aroma of bacon and milk chocolate. The rum is more noticeable in the flavor but is initially harsh. Eventually softens behind lots of smoke and milk chocolate. Lingering charred wood quality. This one nailed the smoked aspect.
