COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed with our German ale yeast, lightly toasted malts and enhanced with a blend of winter spices this beer should do the trick. Malty, rich, and a touch spicy.

Pours copper with tan head. Smell malty with a little spice. Taste is clean malts, a bit of caramel and spice. med light bodied. Clean malty after taste. Spices are very light, but it is still a good brew.

Reddish orange pour with creamy off-white head. Aroma of caramel, toasted malt, and spice. Toasted malt flavor with caramel, nuts, and spice. Creamy body. Nice beer.

Captain Lawrence is a brewery that, in my opinion, tends to make decent beers of conventional styles. Their ďWinter AleĒ seems to epitomize this hypothesis: itís a traditional winter warmer brew and a beer that tastes good and is fairly easy to drink, but lacks anything memorable or special. At least itís priced right.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a goblet. There was no freshness date and it cost $2.50 ($0.21 per ounce).

Appearance: Rusty brown hue; extremely cloudy body. Pours to an average sized, white, frothy head which retains and laces fairly well.

Smell: Nose reminiscent of a standard amber ale but with distinct winter spices. Not too intense, but nice.

Taste: This is a beer that could easily pass for a standard American amber ale as it has all the makings of the style: a malt-forward palette thatís fairly sweet, but at the same time has a good amount of hops to keep it in balance. Darker malt presence is noticeable right away, imparting some caramel and toasted bread flavors. Through the middle thereís a dry bitterness which is accentuated by a light spicy character. Interestingly enough, the breweryís website does not reveal which spices are in the beer, though they seem to be similar to that of a pumpkin brew with notes of nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger. Thereís also a subtle nutty character skulking in the background. All in all itís a fine-tasting beer which, despite its seeming complexity, only manages to create for a ďgoodĒ overall taste, which is fine if thatís all they were trying to accomplish.

Drinkability: This seems to be a seasonal whose recipe varies from year to year and the 2014 edition weighs in at 6% ABV. It doesnít seem to be quite as full-bodied and robust as that potency would usually deliver, but at no point does it feel light or underwhelming. The mouthfeel is more of lighter medium intensity with average carbonation. It goes down smooth and finishes clean Ė which is nice since thereís nothing cloying about it, but also a bit disappointing that the flavors donít linger when they probably should.

On tap at Carroll place. No aroma. Flavor is nutty, slightly spicy, and exceedingly watery. Tastes like a spiced up weak bock. Very flat mouthfeel. Itís ok thought probably better than Iím making it sound.

Very light but slightly woody smell, tastes like a spicy stout...medium heavy malt low hops, finish is watery...wish it finished stronger

Bottle @ Presidential Suite. Copper pour with a white head. Mostly just bready malt. Some toast and nutmeg on the nose. Maybe a bit of cinnamon. Kind of tart and metallic. Flavor has bitter copper and some sour citrus peels. Old spices. Sweet bready malt base of toast and biscuit. Meh.

Bottle from JT, thanks buddy! Dark reddish brown pour, with two fingers of frothy white head. Aroma is light malts, mild spices, not much else...pretty underwhelming. Taste is light grains, followed by some mild tartness with prickly carbonation and a sharp thelma and Louise ending. I wouldnít say its offensive but itís certainly a below average beer.

12oz. Tasted at RBSG grand tasting post-tasting. Clear amber color. Thin of-white ring of head. Medium body. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. Light rough texture. Caramel malt. Bigger spice taste. Moderate sweet, moderate spicy. Tastes OK. Meh. I feel like even if this was fresh it still wouldnít be my speed.

Growler. Pours a lightly hazed amber with a very thin linen white head that is gone after the first sip and leaves no lace. Pleasant aroma of malt with a touch of sweetness. No spice detected. The flavor is malt, caramel, and bread that has been lightly toasted. Again, no evidence of spice. Well rounded mouthfeel. Very mild bitterness at the finish. Medium bodied.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 4/13/14

Aroma: The aroma is bready malts, dough, and some winter type spices
Appearance: It pours a murky reddish-brown color with a fizzy beige head and light lace
Flavor: The flavor is much the same, doughy malts, some spice, and a mild hop bitterness
Palate: The feel is okay, with a light-medium body, average-plus carbonation, and a mild dry finish
Overall Impression: Finally spring is here, and since itís 78 degrees outside right now and Iím drinking this on my patio I should probably finish off whatever winter beers I have left...
Anyway, as for the beer itself, Iíll say it is solid. I canít go much above solid, but it is solid for sure. Still, Iíd like to see them go beyond this with their standard/12 oz beers, as their bomber beers are usually quite good.

This one poured a light brown color with an off white head. Aroma was of light spices, toast and caramel. Falvor was similar, not overly sweet, but fairly bland and uninviting.
