2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Poured dark brown with a small, light brown head. Toasted malts and some chocolate aroma. A little cloying and some bitterness. It is not well made, but the kind of cheap, Latin American dark I kind of like.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
355ml bottle. Poured rather cola-like with a fine, fizzy & fading tan head atop an opaque brown body. Aroma similar to a homebrew kit Woodfordes Norfolk Nog I did several years back - dark fruits, some toasty, roastiness and yeast. More dark, dried fruit-like characters in terms of flavour. Quite sweet & lightly lactic with a touch of molasses, cola and liquorice about it. Light to medium body, medium carbonation, medium length gently bittersweet finish. Pretty good - I’d certainly drink it again and it was a welcome change from the weak lager game I started on.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
If it’s a stout, it’s certainly a sweet one. What would make it a foreign stout? Because it’s not Irish? C’mon… To start with, I doubt that it’s a stout. This piece of Brazilian history is over 100 years and it was first produced in a time when Brazilian beers were probably 100% made with lager yeasts. With the little statistics known and a good deal of daring, it claims to be the first stout to be produced in Latin America. I could be wrong in my conclusions, but the recipe includes colouring agents and caramel sweeteners, probably molasses, very much like the Brazilian “Malzbiers”, a unique type of lager that are style here in this website as Schwarzbiere. Caracu however, was always considered a superior dark beer as compared to the sticky Malzbirers. Not as sickening sweet, but with a better balance between sweet and bitter. The colour is nice black, with an embarrassingly thin and brief tan head, not worthy of the name – Caracu is an “ancient”, pre-Brahman Brazilian breed of cattle with tan colour, derived from Spanish oxen long imported into S. America. The smell is sweet, again not unpleasant, but it gives all the indications that this is a sweet stout. Roasted malts, a touch of chocolate and coffee, but not much. The flavours are solid and stay around the caramels and molasses, with a pleasant bitterness. Medium bodied, it is grit-chalky on the bite. Not bad. I would believe it is a stout if I was not familiar with the typical regional bluff. I should also mention the popular belief that eggnogs made with Caracu and duck eggs are supposed to recover the mojo in any men, no matter their age. That is a unique achievement. Not only part of history, this beer is already part of folklore.

355 ml brown bottle at Herr Brauer. Pours an opaque brown color with a slight tan head. Medium body and slight molasses-like aroma. Creamy mouthfeel with even dry/sweet dark malt flavors. OKAY.
