Enjoyed with friends as an homage to his late father. From notes, July 25, 2012. A: Pours a pale gold with a big fluffy head that quickly dissipates into sparse dots of lace. S: Ever so slightly fruity. Faint floral notes. Some off aromas start to sneak in as it warms. T: Liquid Corn Pops with a metallic off-flavors. M: Thin and watery, strong carbonation. O: Not the worst, but doesn’t set itself out even in that mediocre company. Drinkability hurt by slightly off taste. Serving: can

Had way too many of these while visiting South Africa. Very popular there, for some reason unbeknownst to me. Not really an interesting beer by any means, a blond lager with a really crispy flavor. It gets the job done.

Can. From memory. Below average lager, but less awful than the macros. Good beer for pong and quarters.

Drank alot of this during my romp around southern Africa. Light, drinkable and readily available at the time. A decent brew.

Draft at kerryman in Cape Town. Dark golden pour with fluffy white head. Crisp aroma. Malty smooth taste. Clean easy drinking lager. Nothing special but would have again for sure

Taste notes: Yup, it definitely needs some taste. I’d use this stuff to hydrate after a workout.

Light as a feather with about as much substance as the Spice Girls, this old ’classic’ was one of the first beers to be proudly dumbed down. And by the way, virtually hopless. Blandarama.

Another oldtimer that was less than stellar way back when and hasn’t improved much with age.

Pours a very light yellow color with very little head. Nose is light malts Light in body with a watery mouthfeel. Flavor is very mild and there is a very unpleasant bitterness in the finish. I would say there are no hops in this but the bitterness must come from somewhere. A beer of my youth . Wow have we come a long ways.

Carling Black Label has a thick, white head, a clear, bubbly, straw appearance, and some lacing left behind on the glass. The aroma is standard: grain husks, sweetness, and straight-up beer. Taste is the same: sweet grain, sourness, a touch of bitter, some bite, and "that beer flavor". Mouthfeel is light and watery, and Carling Black Lager finishes crisp, clean, refreshing, and very dry. Some metallic taste shows up, which is usually the case with canned beer, regardless of what is claimed by the major media. Overall, I think this is a very good beer, and it is certainly worth trying. It’s one of those old-time classics and should pair well with burgers and fries. RJT
