3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle (500ml). Nice lively frothy-creamy lively pour, yelds a large lasting creamy tan pancake batter head, clear deep ruby. Very dry deep roasty aroma, nutty and oily, somewhat lactic and ... can’t put my finger on it, but something I don’t quite like. Taste is dry, roast malt, hints of coffee grounds, very dry hops, slightly sour milk - a little thin. Somewhat acidic and flat mouthfeel, finishes dry and bitter - takes a bit of getting used to, but I suspect this is pretty damned on-style - I’d love to try it on cask.

2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
Tap at d.b.a. Dark black colour with 1" of pale tan head. Low aroma with light milk chocolatey notes. Light roastiness. As it begins to warm a very soapy vegetal character pops up in back. Light roastiness but the dirty dishwater esters and watery palate don’t do it any favours.

500 ml bottle. Pitch black colour with ruby highlights. Mostly diminishing frothy tan head. Chocolate, coffee, caramel, and roasty aroma. Acidic fruit, dark chocolate, roasty coffee flavours with a roasty bitter finish. Medium bodied, chewy but oily mouthfeel.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Not necessary the most boring stout I’ve tried but certainly the most subdued.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
This is a very nice classic Irish dry stout. I am a fan of this style of beer. Guinness Extra Stout is my regular beer when out in a restaurant.
It is Saint Paddy’s Day today and I had to have an Irish Stout so it was the perfect day to try it and I was so looking forward to it I was afraid I would be let down. I was not disappointed. It is classic to the style so there are few bells and whistles, meaning it is nothing super special but it is very good and it hit exactly the spot I was hoping it would! Here’s the break down:
Appearance: Pours black with a thick tan head and minimal lacing.
Smell: Sweet dark roasted malts and a hint of molasses and coffee.
Taste: Dark malts and dark fruits. Mild flavor, very gentle. It has a bit of unsweetened chocolate and a bit of burnt coffee in the flavor. A bit of a hops dryness especially in the finish. The aftertaste is very nicely dark and sweet. There is nothing extreme it is simply easy and approachable.
Mouthfeel: Medium -full mouthfeel, creamy and nice and dry.
Drinkability: VERY sessionable! This is a fantasitc Saint Paddy’s Day or everyday beer. If it wasn’t twice the price of Guiniess (here anyway) I would replace my regular in the fridge. As it is it is not quite worth the price difference to make it a regular of mine. I do reccomend trying it though if you like the style.
Hope this is helpful.

Bottle. Solidly decent stout. Hard for me to distinguish from Guinness (Extra Stout). Maybe a bit more smoke. Looks great.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured a deep black with a whispy white head. Roasted aroma with malty notes. Initial flavor is smokey, but not overwhelming, with the roasted barley coming through on the tongue. Clean, slighty acidic after taste. Nice stout.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Guinness but better. More robust character all around. More roast, more malt, more body. Not like Extra Stout, but Guinness to the Nth. Not easy to come by, but definately enjoyable.

UPDATED: AUG 21, 2006 good but not great - that’s for sure.
And now that I read the the 4.3% - ouch that stinks. Guiness is better - but just watching this beer pour and then settle is a site to behold. Appearence so perfect - It was all downhill from there.
