This stout has a robust flavour with a ful bodied and smooth mouth feel. The roast flavours lead to a dry espresso like finish. A generous addition of fuggles hops lead to a tart bitterness which mingles with the roast espresso flavours on the tongue.

Bottle. Drank this as a tribute to the old Irishman, Jim Calhoun. At first, I was doubting itís potential, but I guess it did itís job after all. As a beer, though, itís really nothing special. Very watery. Very thin. Not bad, mind you, just not much of anything. I guess thereís a bit of chocolate and very mild roasted malts in the mouth, but thatís about it. Smooth going down, and not as bitter as I had expected. Not bad.

UPDATED: AUG 21, 2006 good but not great - thatís for sure. And now that I read the the 4.3% - ouch that stinks. Guiness is better - but just watching this beer pour and then settle is a site to behold. Appearence so perfect - It was all downhill from there.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a nice large fluffy tan head -- it looks the part but itís slightly downhill from here. Aroma is sweet and malty, slightly roasty with some coffee and maybe some chocolate. Flavourís...different, not what I expected. Itís somewhat watery, just a little roasty with some sweet malt and a dry bitter finish. Flavour could use more coffee and chocolate, as it is it doesnít do much for me. Medium bodied, acidic mouthfeel. Looks great but the rest, not so much.

There is no denying that this looked excellent in the glass. Aroma gives roasted bitter burnt coffee malts, some dark chocolate if you serch for long enough. Taste is again as one dimentional as the aroma.

Pours opaque black into the glass with a diminished tan head leaving webbed lace. The nose is of roasted grains. Dry roasted flavor.... emphasis on dry. There is a slightly hopped roasted finish, as the description says... "roast bite". As it is dry, not much effervescence here. Some coffee (grounds?), and smoky grains noted. The mouthfeel is full-bodied but lightly crisp at the same time. As stouts go, itís not my favorite style, but my palate allows me to appreciate the offering.

Bottle. Dark brown with light brown diminishing head. Aroma offers burnt malt, tar and bitter chocolate. Chocolate and hops in the flavor. Nice long finish with soothing bitterness. Well made stout, which seems to lack some alcohol to balance the chocolate though.

[249-20070331] 500mL. Smells like liquid steak, a little plastic and some coffee malt. Dark brown black body with a medium-lasting creamy light tan head, light lacing. Rich coffee malt flavour has a bitter coffee steak finish. Full body. Tastes better than it smells.
