can8ianben (903), Pasadena, California, USA Nov 29, 2005 Bitter, malty, but also a nice hoppy backing. Dark amber colour, big thick head that quickly fades. Nice taste, but not overwhelmingly good. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 14, 2005 Updated: Dec 7, 2007Re-rate, LCBO fall release 2007. Nice dark red, small white head. Hints of dust and some fruit in aroam. Tase is pretty good - better than the off bottle I had previously - nice amount of malt, some smoke, lots of dark fruit. Well hopped for the style as well. Even some sweetness as it warms. Pretty good, I’m glad I tried it again. Original 6/4/3/2/8. Bottle. Very dark red, big thick creamy off white head - looks good. Malt and bread aroma. Harsh stale malt taste. Thin watery mouthfeel. Like Kilkenny without the creaminess. Harsh lingering bitter finish. Damn, their stout was excellent but this is pretty poor, best before dec 05 bottle. OldMrCrow (1179), Seattle, Washington, USA Nov 11, 2005 Updated: Jan 10, 2006From the bottle.
Pours a deep red-brown, with an ample if somewhat coarse brownish head. The aroma is pretzel malts with a bit of grass; the flavor is a rather sour hops cut with the warmth of sweet malt and roasted grain. Nutty tones, a hint of coffee, hints of smoke. The mouthfeel is almost prickly in its carbonation, but otherwise thin.
Not a bad beer, but not one I’ll hurry to revisit either. A previous rater said it well, emphasizing that despite its positive aspects, "I wouldn’t rate it high as there was no overall impression of high quality." ryan (1774), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Nov 8, 2005 Pours dark amber with small off-white head, mostly diminishing. Aroma is sweet, mostly caramel. Flavor is light and sweet. Pretty boring. altkencru (143), USA Nov 7, 2005 Awful! I guess it’s possible I had a bd batch but this stuff had no body and no flavor. DrBayern (1135), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Nov 2, 2005 12 oz. bottle. Clear deep ruby, off white medium but well sustained head with nice lacing. Very appealing looking. Faint sweet malt aroma, with barely detectable hops. Medium body dominated by caramel, woody flavor. Little hops in evidence except for the dry, lightly bitter finish. Paskal (146), La Prairie, Quebec, Canada Oct 25, 2005 Bouteille-Odeur caramalisée et d’épices. Rouge-brune avec un col beige semi-crèmeux. Présence de houblon? Goût très amer.
