| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 19, 2009 Almost black with a big cappuccino-colored creamy head that stays around for a while before settling into a thin lid of foam leaving some lacings.
A pleasant but somewhat light smell, especially considering the style. Coffee and roasted malts dominate. Some chocolate, dark fruits and alcohol as well.
Plenty of coffee and roasted malts in the flavor at first at first. Some tannins. I actually think it gets slightly acidic in some sips. Faint smoky aromas. Notes of chocolate and dark fruits, and a decent malty sweetness. Soy sauce and a slight salinity in the middle. The finish is surprisingly bitter with a bit too prominent taste of warming alcohol, and faint spices.
Moderate body, pretty smooth texture, medium carbonation. Would have liked a fuller body.
This is a very good porter, and considering the brewery it’s really good. But it’s a bit too simple and it lacks some complexity. Good have been more balanced as well, especially the taste of alcohol is somewhat to prominent.

Amazingly, there was almost no oxidation in this beer, despite the age. Also, interestingly, called both a porter and an imperial stout on the label, and apparently a Baltic Porter by the brewery itself. I’m guessing Baltic Porter was not a recognized style in the 70s. Anyway, moving on.
Originally, I was under the impression that this was supposed to be an imperial stout. As such, I found it thin by current standards. Of course, no reason to mark down this beer for that - wouldn’t be fair.
Chocolate and vanilla notes, some leather and a light astringency are present. All in all, a not overly complex beer that is still tasting quite good and has held up remarkably well. I had no high hopes for this beer, so I was pleasantly surprised. Nice. wetherel (1594), Encinitas, California, USA
