COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s note: Carlsberg Gold is a Malaysian-based brew that was initially launched in 2007 as a special edition 160th Anniversary Brew. The popularity of the brew compelled the brewery to make it a regular brew, and it chose the name Gold. It is unknown if there is any connection to the Danish Carlsberg’s Sort Guld.

Carlsberg’s 160th Anniversary Brew was inspired by a 19th Century beer style, refined to deliver a pronounced aroma and smooth aftertaste. Savor this unique recipe in celebration of our dedication to brewing the finest beer since 1847.

Ljusgul i färgen, litet vitt skum. doftar svagt av malt, frukt, ngn råfrukt och grönsaker. Smakar vattnigt och maltigt, liten fruktighet, liten bitterhet.

Crisp golden coloured body with a thin, one centimetre tall white head. Aroma of light malt, metal, a tiny hint of hops and a fair amount of unfinished sugars - not bad and not as pungent as most danish beers. Light-bodied; Surprisingly fresh and sweet flavour with a lot of nice malt flavours tucked into a tiny bit of fruits, alcohol and a light metallic taste. Aftertaste is relatively mild, no harsh flavours coming through - just a bit of malt, light hops, earth and some light alcohol. Overall, not a bad beer - just light, but no bad harsh flavours, and a little light citrus, hoppy, airy note on the finish. Still, nice to try, given that you can’t find/see this ever, but not a great beer of course. I sampled this 32 cL can purchased from a small grocery store in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 22-April-2011 sampled at home on the other side of the globe in Washington on 21-August-2012. My can differs from the picture as mine was pure black with gold writing, but a short can (32 vs 33 cL).

33cl Can bought in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. Clear deep golden colour, white head. Aroma is sweet, apple juice, caramel, artificial. Tastes the same, too sweet, not great. Light bodied, oily mouthfeel.

330 ml can. Golden body with a white head. A bit weak aroma of grain and malt, but otherwise nothing wrong here. Flavor is mild, refreshing fruity, light malty and some hops, not particular bitter. Totally drinkable thirst-quencher but nothing exiting, just like thousands of other industrial pilsners like this.

Can in KL. Ugly beer, is gold, flat. Aroma is very sweet, plastic, with hint of rotten fruit. Sticky flat palate. Too sweet with low-grade caramel flavors. Tastes better than it smells but is bad beer I will not revisit.

Canned. Deep gold colour. No head. Strange appley aroma. Flat-tasting, with paint notes, plastic and other random unpleasantries.

10-May-08 (640-ml bottle: Free sample bottle for stewarding the 2008 World Beer Cup in San Diego, CA) This special 160th Anniversary Brew was designed to resemble the Carlsberg beer of 160 years ago. It is malty and somewhat grainy, but pretty big on flavor for a pale-colored lager. No question in my mind that this tastes like an all-malt beer, no adjuncts, no off-flavors, just pleasant maltiness. Lightly spicy hops adds gentle bitterness that balances the maltiness quite nicely. The nose is quite malty, with light, spicy hop aroma and a bit of graininess. Medium body shows nice weight for the style. Carbonation is medium. Enough hops to keep the palate from weighing down, but a bit more hop spiciness could help cleanse the palate further. Pale-golden in color with stunningly perfect clarity. The white, foamy head rises to over an inch on the pour and holds a half-inch layer atop the body. Large, dense patches of lace stick to the glass. Just gorgeous, except for the total lack of carbonation streams rising through the beer. Overall, quite a nice pale-colored lager. Why can’t Carlsberg make their standard lager this tasty?

640 ml bottle of Carlsberg Malaysia 160th Anniversary Brew shared by DarkElf, and obtained at World Beer Cup 2008. Pours crystal clear golden color with a large white head that lingers nicely and leaves thick lacing. Malty aroma, with floral hops evident, a bit of herby, vegetal character emerges as it starts to warm. Malty flavor, toasty and full, herbal and floral hops with a bit of spicyness in the finish. Light to medium body and gently carbonation.
