Criollo Stout is the latest in Carlsberg’s Semper Ardens range of exclusive hand-brewed beers. The name comes from the Criollo cocoa beans used in the chocolate that is added during the brewing process. Among the malt types used, chocolate malt and caramel malt deliver the lightly burnt, sweet malt aroma together with the black colour. Rye malt contributes and characteristic acidity and taste nuances. Pilsner malt is also used. Criollo Stout is unfiltered. The remaining yeast adds body and a certain dryness in the finish. A small amount of English liquorice is also added and the stout is hopped with a carefully chosen bitter hop together with a Saaz aroma hop.

Very nice sweet stout, but the price for it is very high in the super markets, but it is all worth trying it out. Good kind of spicy flavour.

Bottle. Brown head. Very dark red body. Choccolate aroma. Choccolate caramel flavor. Pleasantly low carbonated. Bitterness just tastable. I feel like tossing a lump of vanilla icecream into it! Hardly a secret now: I like it.

70 cl Bottle. Yeast in bottom. Very black colour with a good looking brown head, but fast diappearing. Not much aroma, but very smooth and notes of coffee, chocolate, vanilla and roasted barley. Big fine taste of chokolate, liquerish and burned corn, it’s all ends up in a dry and bitter aftertaste.

Aproaching blackness! No head. Aroma is sweet roasted malt and liquorice. Creamy almost cloying mouthful. Taste is liquorice and bitter cocoa. Some sweetness, but the dry bitterness in the end is killing my tastebuds! To quote my friend from Delft is is sticky and chalky! I know this brew is appreciated by a lot of people, but I just really don’t like it!

UPDATED: AUG 14, 2005 (Bottle 70 cl) Version 1: Bottle #2737. This is the original 2001 vintage of this beer at 6,5% ABV.
Pitch black, opaque beer with a creamy, brownish head. Starts creamy, greasy almost cream-like. Some sweetness quickly relieved by a dry, coffeeish bitterness. Very sophisticated brew with 4 different malts, cocoa, chocolate and English licorice. In many ways a great beer. 240901

(Bottle 70) Version 2 - vintage 2003. More chocolate, less licorice. 7/4/7/3/14=3,5 130603
