It’s easy to compare this to the Toohey’s Old Black, as both are available readily on tap around Melbourne. However Carlton have done themselves an injustice with this difficult to drink version. I don’t often leave beer in the glass, but simply had to with this one. Ordinary at best.

Like all CUB products you pretty much get the impression that they brew one big basic beer and just add the different components post fermentation. This one is pretty much the same but OK to drink compared to their other products. Not great but better than nothing.

Thin head, quite a malty aroma there are some nice roasty malt flavours in there however this on is far too watery for my liking. Definitely needs more body.

Doesnt seem to have as much body or head to it when first offered on tap a few years back. At first, like others have noted its a bit watery then the roasted malt flavours come out. Got Better as the chill went out of it.

This beer has an amazing after taste without any hint of the heavyness that tends to come with dark/black beers.

kinda nice roast malt flavor but nothing else really comes through, could stand a little less carbonation
