could this be australias most over rated beer? have had many sessions on this stuff before my eyes were opened to what good beer is. has a very unpleasant "bready" flavour (think cheap white bread here) with an aftertaste of old socks. best avoided.

355mL. Poured a clear, deep yellow with a white, meringue head leaves weak spots of suddy lace. Aroma is apple cider, candy corn. Taste is hydrogen peroxide and massive diacetyl creating a buttered popcorn slick palate. Offensive.

Oh lord. I was hoping to never try another of Australia’s criminally awful pale lagers again; unfortunately I craved a drink and to my horror Carlton was the most appealing of the limited and cringe worthy selection at the "bar". The appeal of this "beer" did only stem from the fact that I had never tried to choke one down before.
It would be possible, and accurate, to copy a review of Tooheys New or Victoria Bitter here - they all taste virtually identical. Nonetheless onto the rating. Pours a pale straw colour with a weak and short lived white head. Horrible artificial aroma - smells like old vegetables and cardboard. Tastes like bad bread . Mouthfeel is unbearably fizzy for a beer and feels like water. Horrid.
Or, put briefly: has the appearance of the spillage on a dirty pub’s bathroom floor, tastes like yeast and nightmares and smells like a mouldy warehouse. Avoid.

Bottle. Pours yellow with small white head. Not much going on here, about the only time I would choose to drink this would be if it’s chilled to -1 degree AND it’s 49(minimum) degrees outside. And I am outside. And there was no water anywhere and I had to drink it to survive.

i’m sure most folk at ratebeer have had a moment of slight annoyance when offering a non-beer-person a taste of a good beer. They have stated that it "tastes like beer". Well despite the fact i hate the idea of a generic beer taste, i think i will use it to describe Carlton Draught.

Schooner on tap at the Royal Hotel, Hill End. Pours the usual clear lager yellow, with a decent enough head. Nothing terribly interesting going on in the aroma - just a moderate level of hoppiness. It tastes pretty straightforward too, with a reasonable level of hop bitterness, perhaps ever so slightly stale, a bit of bread in the middle and a simple hop finish. Nothing to write home about, but nothing too dreadful either, which is tremendous praise for a macro lager like this.

Bottle. A standard as I was growing up, this ordinary lager pours golden amber with a foamy white head that lasts a little while. Grainy aroma with a hint of plastic. Flavour is also grainy with a little bit of sweetness up front and a fair amount of bitterness at the back. Mouthfeel is light and watery with high carbonation. Drinkable, and available just about everywhere in Australia, but nothing special.
