4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 noelcb (271) - Toledo, Ohio, USA - SEP 27, 2005
UPDATED: SEP 28, 2005 Nearly black with nary a head at first. As it warmed, it began to develop a big bubbly frothy head, tan, with pretty good sticky lace. Smells of malt, grain, bread, caramel, molasses, herbs, citrus, and yeast. Nice malt flavor with hints of licorice, chocolate, coffee, cream, cola, but well-balanced with a nice hoppy bitterness, and a lingering bitter finish. Mouthfeel is good but a tad thinner than most stouts.

Having lived in Aus for over a year, and then having returned to visit Tasmania afterward, I find it ironic that I had to go to Juneau Alaska to find this beauty in Thibideau’s Liquor Store of all places! Pours an oily black with a dark brown head. Rich aromas of coffee, bitter chocolate, and vegemite (or soy sauce if your Canadian I guess). Heavy, velvety mouthfeel, sweet but richly flavourful, rounded out by a nice dry finish. For all the garbage CUB has put out, this was an outstanding surprise!
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Reid (1434) - Salem,Oregon, Oregon, USA - NOV 6, 2003
I bought this in plain brown 1 pt 9.6 oz bottle with an old fashioned style plain label.
The beer poured very well and left a thick tan head atop a dark brown almost black beer..the head went down somewhat but still clung on to the edges.
This has a great stout smell the roasted almost burnt malts..i love this, this one smelled better than Guiness.
Wonderful taste IMO, its a good mix of burnt malt and good hoppiness..i tasted loads of caramel, treacle and a hint of black espresso coffee..delicious.
feels really smooth on the mouth but leaving sensation all along the tongue.
Very drinkable..good stout at a not too bad price will drink again!

Bottle. Pours deep black with a nice mocha head and clinging lace. Aroma is a nice banana-chocolate with hints of smoke. Light smoke and campfire are the dominant flavors, but they never overpower. Spreads along the tongue almost perfectly. Great beer. Wasn’t expecting much- I was actually dreading it- but I loved it. Underrated beer. I’ll definitely buy more.

Pours out a very dark brown color, with an inch or so of rocky brown foam. The head recedes in a couple minutes and provides surprisingly little lacing. I notice a slightly burnt malt in the aroma - pretty nice.
The flavor played tricks on me at first. In the initial sip, I thought the flavor peaked too soon, and was a little weak. But with the second and all subsequent sips, the flavor was fuller, more complex, and quite tasty. I taste roasted malt (naturally), bitter chocolate, coffee, raisin bread, and a little wheat germ. The beer was bitter and sweet and just plain old tasty. Medium body, mild but occasionally prickly carbonation - how‘d they do that? Long lasting coffee/chocolate aftertaste.

Color, fully black. Head, big, beefy, brown. Aroma: rich and delicious, roasty and bitter beauty, with a lot going on! Anise, pepper, dark rum, a bit of chocolate, a touch of coffee, and a touch of cream. Wow! Wonderful!
A brisk battalion of hops jumps on board the palate and remains for the duration. Big, fat, delicious, luscious roasted malt. Flavor and texture is perfect, drinkability divine. A touch of sweetness emerges, and mingles with the darker flavors, making for a more complex flavor profile.
They made an excellent choice to bottle these only in these gargantuan containers. Less would not be enough.

Pours black with a small cream colored head. Aroma is roasted malts and what seems like lactose. Taste is roasted malts and also the lactose again, although it isn’t labeled as a milk stout, this for sure has a bitter lactose to me. I really like this stout though.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 brenn79 (922) - Idaho, USA - MAR 12, 2010
16 oz. bottle- Pours black with a good tan head, lacing is average, the aroma is caramel malt and kind of syrupy, good. The flavor is a very mellow kind of a creamy sweet stout, which I prefer to dry stouts, just really drinkable. This beer is better than I expected, I wonder if it gets better with age considering the expiration date isn’t for almost two years.
