dprior (118), Somerville, Massachusetts, USA Apr 8, 2002 Ick. Not much of a head. It doesn’t really smell like anything. Tastes, well, not very good. Kind of light and it’s got a weird aftertaste... almost vinegar like. Really pretty poor. I had to have some water to get rid of the taste in my mouth.
DuffMan (1915), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Aug 18, 2008 Having lived in Aus for over a year, and then having returned to visit Tasmania afterward, I find it ironic that I had to go to Juneau Alaska to find this beauty in Thibideau’s Liquor Store of all places! Pours an oily black with a dark brown head. Rich aromas of coffee, bitter chocolate, and vegemite (or soy sauce if your Canadian I guess). Heavy, velvety mouthfeel, sweet but richly flavourful, rounded out by a nice dry finish. For all the garbage CUB has put out, this was an outstanding surprise! Delirium (420), Santa Cruz, California, USA Aug 16, 2008 Bomber. Pours black with a large, fluffy, lasting dark tan head. Bold aroma of burnt coffee, licorice, nuts, and caramel; sweet and roasty. Flavor is somewhat more subdued, with roast malt, moderate caramel sweetness pairing oddly with some sourness, a bit of metallic flavor (subdued hops?), and nice long roasty finish. Moderately chewy palate. An unusual stout---doesn’t quite pull it off, but there’s enough interesting going on here to be worth drinking, and probably somewhat underrated. MBison (356), Southern Highlands, Australia Jul 15, 2008 Bottle (375ml). I used to drink this quite regularly a few years back, it was one of the first stout’s I really got into, and all these years latter it still impresses. Poured black with a large, thick, fluffy, light-brown head which lasted well. Toasty aroma with roasted chocolate malts, licorice, coffee, sweet caramel and some nuts. Flavor was a light burnt bitterness with roasted chocolate malts, caramel, licorice, black coffee with bitter chocolate in the finish. Medium bodied with medium carbonation, a dry mouthfeel and a good finish. tedovertu (105), Apple Valley, Minnesota, USA Jul 5, 2008 Bottle, Large rocky light brown head. Good lacing. Dark pitch black color. Aroma of chocolate and burnt coffee. Full creamy body with average carbonation. Bitter finish. Better than the running average of 3.15. bhensonb (2832), Woodland, California, USA Jun 30, 2008 750 ml bottle from Bottle Trek. Dark brown/black color with a reasonable tan head. Toasted, but not burnt, malt aroma. Rather thin bodied with moderate carbonation. Flavor is slightly sour toasted malt, with coffee, chocolate and a touch of dark fruit. Maybe toffee. Finish is rather bitter and dry. Decent drink.
