4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 muzzlehatch (4425) - Burlington, USA - DEC 31, 2005
Sample, then full glass, at the brewpub. Hazy near-opaque amber with lots of fanciful lacing and a bit of creamy head that lasts and lasts....gorgeous fresh, ripe apricots, bitter orange and sharp floral character in the nose, touch of farmy pungency...in the body, bittersweet fruit, musty dank PNW hops, sweet orange coming out late and contrasting beautifully with the strongly woody finish...bit of a challenge, and the body could be a tad fuller (though the bittersweet texture makes up for that somewhat) but this is truly excellent.

Draft at the brewpub as Hopulus Lupulus. Awesome thick yeasty appearance, thick murky orange brown. Solid IPA, thick and malty, with some orange citrus hop balance. Very smooth, lots of thick yeast, malt tones. Hits the spot.

Tap @ the brewpub. Color is a thick, murky, dirty, golden. The head is thick and soapy and leaves a similar thick and soapy lacing. Cannot see through the beer but it looks dirty rather than pretty. Aroma, all hops: bitter and tropical fruits with an airy bitterness to it. In the flavor the bitterness is subdued by a thick maltiness. Fortunately, the maltiness isn’t a caramel sweetness (which I dislike) but just a thick unsweetened maltiness. Muffled fruit juice and tropical fruit hops emerge in the flavor as well. it is ok.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Narnad (1147) - Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA - MAR 14, 2009
Humulus Lupulus came an amber/red color with some cloudiness to it with a one inch thick off-white head that left great lacing. Aroma is a strong mixture of citrus, pine and floral hops with a light caramel malt aroma in the tail of the inhalation. Hops hits you right in the mouth, first citrus then moving into a grassy/piney middle and ends with a somewhat sweet malt ending. The feeling of the beer is a bit watery at the end like its missing something in the body. Overall a great beer if your in the mood for something bitter and melds well with its malt flavor.

On tap at the brewpub on 6/20/07 as Humulus Lupulus: Pours a transparent, slightly hazy bronze with a thin, airy, wispy-lacing white head. Aroma boasts good piny citrusy hop notes and sweet caramel malt. Body starts lightly sweet with plenty of grapefruity bittering and flavor hops toward a bittersweet citrusy finish.

On tap at the brewery as Humulus Lupulus. Hazy orange body, medium off-white head. Aroma reminded me of Bells Two-Hearted Ale, with plenty of leafy, strong pine and grapefruit hops notes. Soapy, citrusy, piney hops body backed by biscuity, bready malts. Fresh, potent, and crisp with good balance. A winner.
