COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A silky smooth, full-body beer with a sturdy black color. This beer features a mild bitterness with hints of roasted caramel and chocolate for a true taste sensation. A slight coffee taste in the finish.

UPDATED: NOV 17, 2007 On tap at the brewpub on 6/20/07: Rich opaque appearance has a roasty dark chocolate nose. Nice smooth roasty flavor with some earthy dark caramel presence. A nice stout.

GABF 2004: Dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate and a touch of roasted malt. Starts lightly sweet turning a touch drier toward the bland finish. This could use a touch more body and complexity, but is still a smooth drinking beer. I do expect a little more out of my stouts though...

Had a pint at the brewpub. Pours a soft black, with a rich tan head. Has a caramel, malty aroma, Smells of a hint of coffee/chocolate but the roast outweighs the sweetness. Has a medium, bitter taste. Almost makes it to a Imperial Stout, falling just short. Good Stout. Big fan of Carlyle....this is one of the reasons why.

Draft at the brewpub. Opaque black-brown. Roasty, classic Stout. Sweet, almost approaching Sweet Stout on second thought. Medium to full bodied, with some sticky caramel tones. Middle of the road. Generous road trip rate.

Sampler @ the brewpub, the best of the regular offerings. Fully black color. Aroma is awesome with lots of chocolate, dry cocoa, and other aspects that make it come off as a sweet, creamy pastry. Some charred elements in there as well as roast. All the aspects I like in a stout, melding well together. Taste is less complex with more roast and a watery flavor of a dry pastry. Easy drinking to boot, I would stop by just to have this one again.

Pours from the tap dark black with a thind head that lines the edges. Aroma is heavy roasted black patent with some chocolate characteristics. The flavor has a chocolate up front which fades very quickly to a dark malt bitterness. Overall a very standard stout; bitter, black and slight coffee taste.

Very dark beer with medium whitish head. Vey nice mouthfeel with decent aftertaste. I bought a growler and drank at home. I would buy it again.

On tap at brewpub

I wound down the sampler flight with this beer. There were two versions on tap so I opted to try the regular before comparing it to the black walnut seasonal release. Overall it is a very solid stout that does everything well. It was a bit of a suprise to find though I shouldn’t be too shocked. Carlyle seems to do well with most of their releases.

Aroma / Appearance - A deep black body swirled fluidly around the sides of the small glass. Malt and charcoal played against smoky coffee. It was solid without being overly thick.

Flavor / Palate - The mouthfeel was full bodied from the start. Smoke, ash and peat create a very nice profile that does everything right. Without any major flaws I would drink this in cool circumstances. A growler would not have been out of the question if I had brought one with me.

Had this one on draught as part of a sampler flight at the brewpub in Rockford, Illinois. Dark brown pour with a thich tannish head, coffee malts and smoke permeate this one with sweet kopi manis towards the finish. A good stout.

On tap at the brewery. Deep opaque brown body, thin buff head. Rich roasted malt aroma with dark chocolate notes and coffee. Dry, slightly acrid roasted malt body, with the above noted coffee and dark chocolate characteristics. Light, creamy palate. A nice dry stout, with a soft palate and light sweetness that balances out the roasted malts.
