One of Michael Jackson’s 500 Classic Brews. Carnegie Porter was brewed for the first time in 1836 and tastes the same today as it did then. Carnegie Porter has a creamy head with a scent of coffee. Its sweet and wellrounded flavor is balanced by the bitterness of the hops. Storage helps the flavor mature and enhances its harmony.

Even the aroma is creamy; the dude with the nose, ecrvich. hits it again with the milk chocolate reference. Hevily laces the sides of the glass, just the tiniest amount of light gets through. Retains carbonation. Not too sweet, nice and malty, hops restrained to say the least. Roasted finish. I also am becoming partial to the style.

2001 version. Pours black with a brown fluffy head that quickly disappates into an espresso like appearance. Nice flavors with coffee, smoke, toffee, licorice and roasted grain flavors prevalent. Strong bitterness up front, which quickly gives way to a nicely balance smooth and semi sweet finish. Slightly heavier than medium body. Yet another great porter almost as good as Anchor (not as sweet), Fullers (not as flavorful), and Sam Smiths Taddy Porter. This is definitely becoming one of my favorite styles.

Sampled both the 1999 and 2000 versions. The 2000 is rated here as it was smoother (perhaps the larger bottle had something to do with it). Toasted chocolate flavors with enough sweetness to offset.

Dark brown, nearly black body with a decent, quickly fading head. Nice, slightly chocolatey nose. Body is kind of like semi-sweet chocolate, with some toasted malt notes and a light bitterness that balances the sweetness very nicely.

A first rate example of a porter. Nice rich aroma, and a slightly bitter/burnt chocolate flavor. Reasonably smmoth and dry finish.

Sweet, roasty, nice dark chocolate taste. Good thick chewiness, and a pleasant lingering aftertaste.

I got a thin head that quickly falls into a dark, not fully opaque liquid. Smells like a tootsie pop, some cookie and molasses aromas. Taste is sweet, may be estered with some bubblegum. Lightly effervescent and slightly acidic. This is very good. I’m not much of a porter person and probably won’t revisit this but it’s definitely worth a visit for lovers of big black brews.

UPDATED: FEB 17, 2005 2001 bottle (BB April 2010). Head is initially average sized, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, malted milk), with a note of cardboard. Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter, slightly husky. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. The recent thread about this beer made me realize it had been a looong time since I rated this one, so why not give it a another go? Blah. Best before 2010 seems a little hopeful at best. Underneath the obligatory oxidation we find malted milk and a pretty grainy malt character. The sourness and husky finish seals the low rating for me. Would rather re-rate with a fresh bottle, but this is what’s on shelves, so it’s the best I can do for now.

Full-bodied, roasted taste that stays in your mouth for a long time. It’s beyond me that such a crap brewery like Pripps manage to come up with such a great brew like this.

Tasted the 2000 version 1/17/02. Sweet finish with slight medicinal qualities. Not particularly roasty, which is not necessarily a bad thing, just unexpected. Decent, though.
