Pours a black, oilly color with a nice head that diminishes quickly to a fine lace. Aroma is typical porter, which is a very good thing. Flavor is roasted coffee, sweet malts, and a grassy, hop-laden finish. Very tasty beer, no doubt about it!

Bottle Pours a very dark reddish brown a modest medium tan head and not much lacing. Aroma is dominated by a strong fruity smell. Grape jelly to be exact. Behind that is a slight prunes chocolate and coffee. Flavor is earthy, slightly sweet, prunes figs and brown sugar. Interesting no grape (like the aroma) or the burnt smokey flavor that is common on many porters. Mouth feel is the only dissapointment her. Soft and smooth but a bit thin. A very tasty brew. A shame I can’t get it out here. Glad I had this before the use by date expired. Only 5.5 years away. Isn't it nice when you are mostly done with a rating of 4+ and realize that you stil have about 14 oz to go on it. : )Thanks again to Probiere for the trade.

UPDATED: MAR 4, 2006 Bottled 2001. Pour black with little head. Had a nutty roasted aroma with some hint of chocolate, coffee, and fig. Definately feels like milk on the palate. Has a sweet fruity taste including plums, prunes, and fig. This brew is more sweet than most porters. I have got to say that this is one good porter. I enjoyed this bad boy more as it got warmer.

Re-rate: Aroma is chocolate, coffee, nuts, carmel, and some cherry. All the aromas are in proportion to each other with none dominating. The cherry is slight however. Flavor is chocolate, nutty, carmel, and has a velvet milk texture.

Bottled 2001Vintage; Tasted July 18, 2004: Almost black color with a tan head. Malty aroma with some hint of chocolate and coffee. Those two pick up quite a bit in the taste. I could have sworn it felt a bit like milk on the palate!

2001. Black as Texas crude, with a thin mocha head that fades in minutes. Sweet and fruity nose yields sorghum or molasses, currants or prunes, cranberry, blackberry, and lavender(!). Starts with a lavish espresso flavor, tempered by fruity acidity and balanced tannins; then, essences of apple, almond, juniper, and RC cola paint the tongue. Chocolate elements are evident, but restrained. Reminds me of both good ruby port, and double-strength Colombian coffee. No carbonation. Pleasantly full-bodied, almost syrupy, but not cloying. Decadent aftertaste of bittersweet chocolate, turkish coffee, black cherry, marzipan, leather, licorice, hop. An excellent elixir that demands to be sipped and savored.

This is an 8.82 oz. bottle bought in Atlanta in 2001. It is the 1998 version and it held up quite well! It has very little carbonation and virtually no head. The aroma is of sweetness, malt, caramel, prunes, and soy sauce. The flavor contains very little hops. It tastes very malty like a chocolate malt (shake). It is dark, sweet, malty, chocolaty, fruity, soy saucy and has a medium body. Overall a nice combination of flavors that developed over a 6 year period.

Bottle, from Systembolaget store in Malmø. 2004 edition. Jet black with flashes of red, thin but lasting off white head and gentle condition. Sweet and fruity malt in the nose with touches of woodiness but all quite restrained. Sweet and smokey in the mouth with some chocolate and roast apparent as well as a fruity note. Finish is long and dry with hints of sweet liquorice, roast barley and chocolate. Deep and warming alcohol note rumbles like distant thunder in your digestive tract. If only the aroma was a little more assertive.

UPDATED: JUN 22, 2004 2001 Edition. Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle into a pint glass. Initial head was about 1.5 inches of fluffy, thick foam which settled into a 1/4 inch after a couple minutes. Almost opaque in the glass, the beer was reddish umber when light could get through. The aroma is not strong and I didn’t smell the coffee mentioned on the label. What I did smell was a very clean and soft fragrance. At first, the Carnegie fills your mouth but doesn’t explode with taste. It’s creamy and smooth, but also light and fresh in the mouth (not overly heavy and surprisingly refreshing for the color). After swallowing, the taste explodes in a not over-bitter flavor. The aftertaste remains bitter for a few seconds and then settles back into a smooth and soft that lingers for about two minutes. All in all, it is the best porter I can remember having. NOTE: I chilled the beer for 30 min. in the freezer, since I'm impatient and I got home late. I'm not sure if it would be better at a colder temperature, but it tasted great even as it got a bit lukewarm.
