One of Michael Jackson’s 500 Classic Brews. Carnegie Porter was brewed for the first time in 1836 and tastes the same today as it did then. Carnegie Porter has a creamy head with a scent of coffee. Its sweet and wellrounded flavor is balanced by the bitterness of the hops. Storage helps the flavor mature and enhances its harmony.

Just poured this one. Black hole colored (no light coming through my desk lamp) with a two finger tan head. 5 for appearance. Aroma reminiscent of Fuller’s London Porter, with big malt, some fruit, chocoff, corn flakes, piney hops, and slight soy sauce. Tastes wonderfully balanced, firm, and complex, with hints of chocolate syrup, capuccino, cherries, corn flakes, molasses. Gets more chocolate syrupy as it warms. Super smooth finish. A delicious beer. Outstanding! If Andrew Carnegie were alive, he’d love this beer that’s named after him. He’d probably even put it in Carnegie Hall next to his art collection.

Bottle labeled Argang 1997. Poured a dark black with almost no head. Aromas of chocolate and licorice . Lighter tastes. Very light coffee on top of the chocolate. Body was a little thin.

Årgång 1997: Pours pure black with just a small halo of foam. Aroma is sweet prune. Flavor is sweet with hints of chocolate, a little smoke, light liquorice with a light coffee and cream finish. Smooth, but light palate. Overall a good porter, but maybe slightly over rated.

Argang 2004. Dark brown (very close to black) body with reddish and amber glints. It is topped with an average off-white creamy head. Nice malty aroma with chocolate and roasted coffee hints. Taste is very well balanced and relatively mild. The roasty and smokey notes are quite evident, especially in its long and very nice finish. Makes me looking forward to my next visit to Systembolaget!

Bottle from 2001. Dark brown color, medium tan head. Coffee and malt aroma. So initially this beer comes through with a thick, creamy body, milk sugary sweet, black cherry, fairly mellow. The roasted tobacco hints are nice. But from there this becomes a somewhat one dimensional brew, if you ignore a lingering flavor that I cannot liken to anything except that underlying mineral water base specific to a lambic. In this setting, that flavor just doesn’t work. So in technical terms, overall, starts out pleasant, then becomes kinda dull.

(Bottled, Årgång 2004, 5.5% ABV) Very dark, reddish brown color with a smallish, beige head. Slightly sweet, milk-chocolatey and brown-sugary, malty aroma. Sweetish, chocolatey, roasted-malty, somewhat acidic flavor with a bitter, dryish but sticky-sugary finish. Medium-bodied, smooth and slicky, low-carbonated palate. A smooth, chocolatey, sweetish and pleasant porter, but not quite top class. Wish I had a ’94 sample :)

Bottle 2001 on label.English Pint glass Pours a thin tan head with notes of alcohol, roast malts and caramel. The beer itself is almost black with amber highlights. The flavor of roasted malt and chocolate balancing the a slight residual sweetness. The body is thin but the carbonation is not that lively so it really goes down smooth.A 5.5% beer that you can cellar. Whats not to love

bottle. dark with a thin tan head... i was expecting a little more. a little bit of a watery moutful. grapes/wine notes mixed into the smokey aroma... flavors a little bland... decent, but not my favorite that i’ve tried in this style

2001arang, drank in Dec. 2004. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Sweet carmel, chocolate and fruit, possibly prune aroma. Complex flavor containing roasted malt, sweet carmel, and a fruity, chocolatey, almost winelike linger on the tongue. Not my idea of a porter, but very unique and delicious.
