Bottle. Dark, reddish-brown, almost black, with a nice, dense tan head. The aroma is mild, with roastiness, coffee, some hops and a sweetness. The flavor has the same elements, but very low on the hops. Dry bitter finish.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Ungstrup (23960) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - MAY 5, 2003
UPDATED: AUG 10, 2006 Vintage 1999, sampled 2006. A pitch black beer with a brown head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of raising and plums, but also notes of oxidation and roasted malt, giving it a sligth acidity. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of plums and chocolate, but also light notes of the alcohol and oxidation, leading to a dry woody end. The mouthfeel is very smooth.

(Bottle 50 cl) Pitch black with a sticky - but not very stable - brownish head. Nice, full body but not very bitter. Roasted notes of coffee and dark, bitter chocolate. A very filling and wholesome brew. During the Swedish prohibition you could get this by the doctor’s prescription only! 140101

50 cL bottle. Pours dark brown to black with a smal, dense and light brown head. Breadish and slight roasted malty aroma. Breadish dark and mild roasted malty flavoured with a mild acidic note from the roasted flavours. Ends roasted and dry breadish. Vague dark fruity note too.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 oh6gdx (16047) - Vasa, FINLAND - JUL 1, 2005
UPDATED: FEB 19, 2007 Bottled (1998 version, rated 2006). Pitch black colour, small beige head. Aroma is slightly acidic plumy and malty. Flavour is quite chocolateish, but has lost most of the other stuff the more recent ones have had. It’s almost close to getting called watery. (6 4 5 3 11)
Bottled (2000 version, rated 2006). Dark rubyish brown colour, small beige foamy head. Aroma is roast, a bit of plum and malts. Flavour is plum, roasted malts, some Madeira-wineish hints. Just lovely, and most likely by it’s primetime. (8 4 8 4 16)
Bottled (2005 version, rated 2005). Dark brown/black coloured, big creamy brown head. Roasted malt and old coffee in aroma. Flavour of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, old coffee and a bit hops. A bit smokish aftertaste. Smooth palate. (7 4 8 4 15)
Bottled (2006 version, rated 2006). Dark brown colour, small brownish head. Aroma is strong malty with some roasted notes in the background. Flavour is quite the same, but the roast becomes more present in the aftertaste. Should probably be aged a bit more to get better. (7 4 7 4 14)
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 omhper (15956) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - JAN 3, 2002
UPDATED: JAN 18, 2003 This beer is IMO too sweet and unbalanced when consumed young. It has to be aged for at least three years (which used to be done for you by the brewery until 1989) to develope it"s full character.
Sampling of the 1989 version in January 2003:
Near black, very little head. Plum and raisin aroma. Clean, dry malt character, chocolate flavour. Vinuous, or rather sherry like. Very mature - probably peaks at this point. All the thick, sticky sugar is now gone. 9/4/8/4/15
Sampling of the 1993 version in January 2003:
Some raisin aroma, but less vinuous. Still slightly sweet with notes of licorice and madeira.

2007 bottle, 5.5%. Roasted aroma. Black colour, small brown head. The flavour is cfeamy and nicely sweet with English liquorice aftertaste. Late malt bitterness. Quite flavourful and well-balanced. Pleasant carbonation. I would probably enjoy it more after a year’s cellaring.

[1996, 14-07-2002] Dark, poor head and carbonation. Very strong aroma: malt, huge porto wine, liquorice. Good taste, mix of roasted malt, light coffee and chocolate, liquorice, porto wine (this is quite rare!); the body isn’t really strong. Good palate, a bit sweet.
