COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle: Filtered.
One of Michael Jackson’s 500 Classic Brews. Carnegie Porter was brewed for the first time in 1836 and tastes the same today as it did then. Carnegie Porter has a creamy head with a scent of coffee. Its sweet and wellrounded flavor is balanced by the bitterness of the hops. Storage helps the flavor mature and enhances its harmony.

2006 bottle, sampled 2006. A fresh beer, smooth, with lots of malt. On the thin side. There is some potential in there, but there are limtis to how much this can improve with age. There are far more exiting porters available nowadays, including some from Swedish brewers.

UPDATED: JUN 21, 2007 D. Carnegie & Co. Stark Porter Pint bottle Argang 2004, absorbed 09/06 Medium pour in an English pint glass. Poured black with hints of deep mahogony, with a small mostly diminishing creamy light brown head. Smelt of very faint molasses, raisins and roastiness. Taste was upfront medium rich sweet molasses and raisins, and light lactose sourness followed by a moderate rustic moldy earthy finish accompanied by moderate roast, with light lactic sourness, dark berries, and caramel character. Mouthfeel was medium, oily, overly fizzy, and slightly astringent. Overall, a baltic porter with a closed up aroma and flavor. Way better warm. Could improve with age. 4/3/7/3/13 D. Carnegie & Co. Stark Porter 8.82 Fl Oz bottle (size?) Argang 1997, absorbed 09/06 Medium pour in a tulip glass. Poured black with some faint brown highlights. Absolutely no head or carbonation. Smelt of strong molasses, raisins, smoke, roasted grain, moderate vinous alcoholic qualities. Taste was upfront strong bitter stale bread, cardboard, and cobwebs with light molasses and dried plum sweetness followed by a moderate bitter cobwebs, tar, hazelnut and yeast bitterness and light molasses sweetness on a light moderate length finish. Palate was light to medium bodied, oily to a dry finish, barely any carbonation, just a slight tingle on the palate, and lightly astringent. Overall, it definitely tastes old. It’s very interesting how it developed, although there is definitely a stale bread flavor. It aged nicely and is very interesting to try, with very subdued, balanced and intriguing new flavors. Past its prime though. Still enjoyable. 6/2/7/3/13

Damn, I wish I would have read omhpers review BEFORE I opened this 2004 version. I’d have kept it around another few years, oh well.....too late now. Dark brown/near black very opaque with a creamy tan head. Scent of slightly burnt toast and dark chocolate with a bit of musty basement thrown in. Sweet, slight vegetal with burnt cofee, light alcohol. Lacing leaves a nice pattern on the glass. Not bad but this just didn’t live up to my expectations. Seems as I missed the best years of this beer by about 15 years. Ces’t la vie.

Pours dark brown with a thin, off-white head. Roast malt aroma dominates and is followed in the flavor. A bit thin and bitter for a Porter. Maybe I got a less than stellar bottle, but in any case there are many good Porters to choose from before I would buy another one of these.

50 cl bottle. Dark brown colour with a little weak head. Light roasted aroma with notes of coffee and malt. Also flavour of coffee and smooth roastedness. Ends up light and nice.

The blackstrap and pumpernickel aroma is the best part of this brew--though the close-to-the-earth, dry, ashcan finish is also nice. A bit of an odd damp-wholegrain-sourdough note (baltic porteresque). Pleasant.

500 ml bottle (2007). Fingerthick light chocolate head over dark brown/near black body. Moderately sweet malt aroma with notes of mild coffee. Taste is mainly sweet dark malts, some fruitiness; plums, raisins and prunes, and notes of caramel and chocolate. Modest hopbitterness. Medium body, oily mouthfeel. Noteable bitterness in the finish. Not bad, but quite ordinary, I’ll re-rate when I obtain a vintage bottle...

A Sim rate (Ølfestival): Opaque black colour. Smells of my tomato sauce. A bit oniony, a bit oily. When you swish it around there is a bit of cherry. Tastes quite sharp and bitter with a fruity raisin finish.

Pours a clear dark brown with a tanned head. Sweet and quite sugary. Some toasted aromas with a malty sweetness. Also some hoppyness towards the end and in the finish. Medium bodied. Medium carbonation. Mostly just sugary.
