3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 FlacoAlto (3152) - Tucson, USA - APR 22, 2007
Best by April 2010, Sampled March 2007
As I pour this beer is shows a clear, dark chocolate brown color; it sits in my glass an opaque, black color though. It is topped by a frothy, initially two-finger thick dirtied brown, tan color. The aroma smells of dark aged malts; notes of chocolate, dusty burnt grain husks, some touches of dry cobwebs and toasted soda crackers mixes with notes of port, sherry and a rich, umami like, lightly concentrated meaty malt character.
The flavor is lightly sweet up front, yet moves to a soft roast driven acidity. The sweet malt notes are a mix of sweetened caramel, and sweet chocolate notes. The finish has a touch of coffee like, burnt bitterness to it as well as a chalky, almost tannic, husky burnt character. I really like the complexity that the slight oxidation notes bring to this beer, it adds a meaty richness to this brew, despite that it has quite a light body and mouth feel to it. I think that the roast character may have faded a bit with time as well, though it is still fairly noticeable, and the flavor profile is still largely driven by the dark malt notes.
In the end this is a fairly tasty brew, but I don’t see how this is going to last until 2010. It is probably already just past its peak, and I could see this starting to develop cardboard-like oxidation notes pretty soon.

Argang 2010 Huge, very dense & fine, very creamy dark-tan head over red-brown shot black beer. Very roasted/sweet aroma, roasted beans & chocolate. Again roasted to burnt flaovur. Dry woody, also cardboard; bitterness is there, but seems much more roasted than hoppy in character, the very finish maybe excepted. A bit of chocolate, certainly warming up, but I hardly get any coffee. Feels very well-bodied, aided by its low attenuation, creamy texture from the head, giving the impression of being very rich. Good, if a bit unidimensional porter. Txs to Mathieu & sis!

Aroma of roasted malt with a rather fresh and slightly metallic note. The taste is sweet with elements of roasted malt, chocolate and coffee, the aftertaste is lingering sweet and malty. Very nice!

Thin head. Nice reddish brown colour. Rich taste of chocolate with notes of coffee, leather and herbs. Not my favourite porter but I have definitely no resistance drinking it ;)

11.2oz bottle courtesy of tkrjukoff. Cheers, Timo! Pours a dark porter brown with an off-tan head. Nose is roasted malts, some sweet coffee, and ripe plums, with hints of spice. Flavor is similar- a blend of sweet coffee and ripe to overripe plums followed by roasted malts, a hint of chocolate, and a finish that is trying to be clean but some plummy fruit sneaks in. Excellent Baltic Porter.

Bottle from Bruisin Ales. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Faint hint of coffee on the nose. Bits of licorice on the tongue. Finish is solid. This one doesn’t do it for me.

Had this beer on a few occassions, always bottled. Bought the first one in Warrensburg MO is was blown away by the typically Baltic nature of this porter. A surprising amount of hops, a smooth body, rich with coffee and chocolate. One of my favorites.

The pour is brown in color with a small tan head. Some roast malt, dark fruit, and a hint of coffee come through first on the nose. A bit dusty and oxidized. Quite a lot of dark fruit, especially prunes. The flavor is fairly simple. Some roasted malt, chocolate, and tons of dark fruit.
