Pours a muddy brown color with an easily formed light tan head. Spotty lacing. Aromas were malty, roasty, and a little smoky. As it warmed, a touch of a fruity berry aroma made its presence known. The taste was very chewy with malt. A sweet malty flavor that filled the mouth and kept the tastebuds busy. After the swallow, there was a hint of earth. An earthy smokiness direct from the soil. Nothing overbearing, but enough to make a difference. Some hoppiness to finish off the taste and give it just a subtle edge, but this was mainly for me peat, earth, smoke, and malt. Modest mouthfeel. It began with a chewy taste, but wasn’t an overly thick monster. Very drinkable. A nice seasonal from Carolina Brewery.
