COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winter Wonder is brewed in the German lager style known as Schwarzbier. This beer originated as a warm fermented ale style in central Germany before cold fermenting lager yeasts were introduced. This malty winter seasonal, though dark in color, is relatively light bodied and has a dry and refreshing finish.

Tap at CH location. Deep garnet brown pour with 1-2 fingers of sandy tan head. Nose is lightly sweet with notes of bread and lightly toasted cereal grain. Bready flavor, grainy with a lightly grassy hop character. Medium body with a soft carbonation

From a growler. Mild carbonation and light bodied. Mostly caramel, toasty malts, some pepper. Taste is fairly faint overall. Lightly dry finish. Not much to report.

Sampled via 64-oz growler during Dark Lord Day ’09. Pours a clear cherry cola cramel colored brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and spotty lacing. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, flowery hops and a touch of bitter apples. Taste is lightly carbonated, medium bodied with some flavors of dried dark pitted fruit, toasted dark malt and some citrus zest. Finish is slightly multi-grain gritty, dry with an average bitter aftertaste.

Clear reddish pour with a decent caramel sweetness and some toasty notes. But not at all what I would pick up if i wanted a schwarz. Same vegetal notes that appear in their other beers.

Copper pour with foamy head and lace. Caramel nose and caramel maltiness, a hint of smoke, followed by an earthy hop finish. A bit thin and watery to me detracted from it a tad but still a nice bp offering.

Dark brown/black pour with no head. Bread flavor malts, but slight tartness going down. Not too bad.

A beautiful looker but not much under the covers. Pours a dark mahogany and the ruby highlights play nicely when held up to the light. Head is frothy and large with nice lacing. Malt character shows a bit of pumpernickel bread and palate is soft. Has a slight tartness in the finish. Overall this is a pretty tame entry and I would have liked a little more in the flavor department.

On tap at Tylers, Durham. The bartender was not clear as to the style, and I confess to being surprised to see that this is a schwarzbier. I suppose it had some of the more pleasant aspects of a dark lager, a bit of a bite, a sharp lager yeast giving it some spice. But it honestly came across like a brown ale trying to flex its muscles a bit. Decent but nothing particularly special.
