3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Capa (1633) - Philadelphia, USA - AUG 29, 2010
Copper colored with a white head. Medium citrus and pine hops with light caramel malts, too. Light hop bite and a bit of sweet malts, too. Refreshing on the beach. Nice but nothing special.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 KajII (462) - Macon, North Carolina, USA - MAY 12, 2012
Bottle. The pour was a medium copper amber with an average sized (1-2 finger) white fluffy head that reduced to a medium cap which lead to some really nice streaky lacing.
The aroma was of a mild straw malt, floral and citrus hops and an earthy yeast with notes of caramel and citrus (grapefruit and orange peel).
The taste was moderately bitter with a mild sweet maltiness and a touch of caramel early on, and then progressed into this hoppy bitter taste that had a good note of citrus towards the end. The flavor lasted for quite a long while with the hoppy citrus flavor fading nice and slow.
Mouthfeel was just above light in body with a decently dry texture and a moderate carbonation.
Overall an IPA that gets back to the basics: hops, citrus and a mild caramel malty taste. You really don’t need much else...
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Cybercat (1904) - Georgia, USA - JAN 15, 2012
Pours a dark, coppery amber, almost mahogany, that is crystal clear and has a fairly thick, fluffy and somewhat persistent off-white head. Aroma is hoppy and fruity, not strong but still appetizing. Hoppy flavor has subtle woody and fruity notes and minimal bitterness. Texture is smooth, firm-bodied and fairly fizzy. Not spectacular, but still enjoyable.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 EHouse (102) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - SEP 7, 2011
Pours a clear hazelnut with a nice off white head. Huge grapefruit aroma o’ hops. This is one of the better IPA’s I’ve had because it is perfectly balanced and not overly bitter. A creamy mouthfeel of roasty malt and a bit of hoppy pine. Finish is smooth with the slightest lingering of citric bitterness.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 guzzler67 (1393) - Hanover, Maryland, USA - JUN 21, 2011
Blurred, reddish amber appearance with a small, fast fading, off white head and moderate lacing. Spicy hop aroma with a hint of caramel malts. Subtle citrus hop taste with toffeeish malts in the background. Medium-to-light bodied, decently carbonated mouthfeel with a short lived finish, Not exciting but not a drain pour either.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jrob21 (1803) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - FEB 4, 2010
Nice white head and cloudy orange color. Aromas and flavors of grapefruit citrus hops. Some green apple fruit flavor as well. Finish is a nice citrus bitterness. A bit of a cream, buttery texture. Is that an infection?
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 HonkeyBra (2281) - Lemont, Illinois, USA - OCT 10, 2009
Sampled at GABF. Pours amber with some white head. Aroma of hops, some caramel. Flavor is pretty meh: some hops and caramel in a kind of messy weird mixture. Well carbonated.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 GT2 (3960) - Washington DC, USA - MAR 21, 2009
330 mL. Pours a clear amber with a decent off-white fluffy head with good retention and spotty lacing. Subdued aromas of floral hops and caramel malt. Taste is more nutty and creamy than citrusy and hoppy. Little bit of coating on the palate. Long, sweet finish. I would say this would be very yummy as an amber ale but not as an IPA. Too weak.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 ben4321 (2222) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - MAR 18, 2009
Location: A friend picked up some bottles on a trip to NC, drank it 3/18/09
Aroma: Citrus, earthy, but mostly the citrus
Appearance: Mildly cloudy, golden color, minimal head
Flavor: Starts off a little sweet, sweetness leaves quickly, and it finishes with a bit of a bitter bite, nice smoothness of flavor
Palate: Light-medium body, solid, not spectacular mouthfeel
Overall Impression:
Not too shabby of an IPA, it’s not a spectacular example of the style, but it drinks pretty well. I enjoyed it.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 joe1510 (501) - Illinois, USA - OCT 1, 2008
12oz Bottle
Bottled 4/23/08
This was an extra in a recent trade with beavers, thanks a lot Mike! Carolina’s IPA pours amber, a little darker then the usual IPA. The body is clear with a minimal amount of carbonation rising slowly to the surface. A fingers worth of creamy white head formed on the pour and left some chunk lace on it’s settling to a cap.
The hops are the first thing to pop showing citric qualities. Orange and lightly sweetened grapefruit are the first two that come to mind along with a squeeze of lemon. There’s an earthiness I pick up here and there but isn’t constantly present. The earthiness goes away as this beer warms up. The maltiness seems to be on the caramel side but is in back letting the hops do their thing.
Flavor follows the aroma stride for stride. Sweet orange peel and lightly sweetened grapefruit show up after the caramel sweet start and lead through the finish. A touch of lemon flashes through occasionally adding to the citric hoppy touch. This is a good IPA.
I’m really digging the mouthfeel of this beer. Medium body with a good silkiness but a noticeable carbonation that massages the tongue nicely. Leaves a growing bitterness behind.
This is an IPA I would have no problem drinking a few at a time. The lower abv (compared to others of the style) and silky mouthfeel keep this beer flowing freely.
This is a very solid IPA from Carolina Brewing. Good hop characteristics along with a muted maltiness and high drinkability make for an enjoyable beer. I would buy this often if available in my area.
