32oz growler shared by dmac! Pours a dark brown/almost black color with a finger of foamy khaki colored head. Aroma of sweet citrus fruit, chocolate malts, and grapefruit pulp. Taste of grapefruit, chocolate malt, citrus rind, burnt toast, and a piny finish. Awesome beer!

Sample and then growler from the brewery. Poured a slightly thinner density of deep dark black that is flat with a smaller soap bubbly off white head. Aroma is probably the best part of this beer. Notes of burnt toast, char, roast, burnt citrusy yellow grapefruits, orange meat, touch of freeze dried coffee beans. Body is bigger than I remembered, full and bold with a good dose of heat and average carbonation with a lingering heat. Flavor of burnt toast, burnt yellow grapefuits, roast, some resiny pine needles, char. Solid stuff.

On tap at The Beer Shoppe in Ardmore, PA. Pours nearly black with an inch of whiteish head. Typical black IPA aroma, lots of piney hops and dark malt. Mouthfeel was actually lighter than Iíd expect from a big ass beer and slightly stingy due to the alcohol. Way too much carbonation. Taste was pine, alcohol, cocoa, mint, light wood and some grass. Very solid double black IPA. Could have dialed down the alcohol by a percent or two and amped up the malt flavor; but very good. Iíve been impressed by Cartonís offerings so far.

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2013 On tap at Barcade with Remy, Barry, and Al. Poured dark brown with small but sticky top. Not much lacing. Notes are bitter hops, chocolate roast, molasses, dark malt, ash and pine. Too toasty and sticky like 99% of the black IPAs out there. Stupid style....just make porters hoppy, donít ruin my dank juices.

Draft at Good Dog. Poured an opaque dark brown. Soft tan foam. Very bitter and spicy. Nice thick body. Burnt toast. Liquorice. Black peppercorns. Coffee grounds. Cigarettes. Currants. Elephant ear mushrooms. Tangelo pith. Juniper berries. Black walnuts. Alcohol is high but feels right against such sharp bitter notes. Deep dark burnt stuff. Fantastic!

Pours as dark and thick as an imperial stout. The aroma however is filled with big sprucey hops on top of a solid dark chocolate and roasted base. The flavor is dominated by a pretty one-noted plain pine hop bitterness but the chocolate from the malt balances it out well. Not bad.

Poured from a growler. Decent sized off-white head of fine bubbles that reduces to a thin sheen of foam containing the tiniest of bubbles. Big hoppy aroma with some tangerine, lemon And a bit of roasted grains. Color is a very dark brown. Body is a bit thinner that you would expect by looking at the brew. Hopped up bitterness, some roasted grains, a bit of dark syrupy plum and some late pine and spruce. Rather clean in the mouth and finishes pretty clean. Not overpowering roast unless or hoppy ness. This is a very well balanced black IPA. Kudos to another NJ brewer making some quality beers.
