3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Can thanks to Dmac. Nose is roasty and hoppy, with a bit of wet dog sort of aroma. Digging deep into the aroma I start to get real piney, and a touch of grapefruit. Black with a small tan head. Taste is a fight for chocolate and hops to take over, with both being fairly balanced. Followed by a distinct and sharp bitterness. Finishes dry with a bit of alcohol warming. As I sip a few more times, I start to get a clashing of hops and roast with a lightly sharp and tart finish. I get this a lot with dark grains and hops. Overall, a bit big and on the pleasant side at first. Alcohol does start to warm up about mid glass. Not a horrible BlackIPA, but not one to make me drink more than a glass.

Poured from 16 oz can. Pours black with foamy off white head. Citrus, pineapple, and roasted malt aroma. Big citrus flavor with tropical fruit, slight roast character in the finish with bitter grapefruit. Iím used to the roasted flavors in the front but in this brew is it in the finish. Thanks Maxbier for sharing this one.

UPDATED: FEB 2, 2015 Dark brown with tan head. Aroma is hopy; pine, citrus, some tropical. Flavor is black licorice, double IPA malty flavor and feel, lots of hop flavors; citrus, mango, grapefruit, but predominantly pine. This is a delicious beverage! Roast, not loads, just enough through the finish. Consider me a Carton fan, I may have to move my family to New Jersey.

Can. Pours black with a thin creme colored head that lingers. Grassy hop aroma over light carbonation. This is a tasty black ipa with reasonable complexity.

Great black ipa! Kind of reminded me of my first, Lagunitas Nighttime!
Nice and hoppy with some mild licorice coffee chocolate notes, mild but detectable and not overpowering, hops seem to balance out, towards the end get the flavors of higher quality coffee/chocolate, as opposed to those who use generic coffee and/ or standard coffee or cocoa nibs. Wow! 10.3 and deliciously drinkable! Keep it up Carton!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a dark black with little brown head. Has an incredibly strong floral and citrus hop taste. Taste is powerful with a hop blast of citrus, grapefruit, and floral, also with malts. However, there is no coffee appearance here. A strong bitter hop aftertaste.
Had a hard time rating this as the beer tastes amazing but as a black IPA, itís missing key characterists of coffee and/or chcolate. Overall, itís phenomenal though!

Draught @ One Mile House, New York
Pours pitch black with a smooth brown head. Aroma of fresh grassy hops, roasty malts, licorice and fruits. Taste is smooth, fruity and really hoppy with some roastiness, resin, licorice and citrus. Finish is smooth, hoppy and grassy with some licorice, resin and grass. Heavy, but tasty black IPA.
