Each autumnís hop harvest presents an opportunity to assess Healy variation in flavors. Some are broad across all the plants in a region, others are specific to unique clones and certain farms. Each fall we choose two different varieties to add to our Harvest Ale. The first we receive straight off the Hines and add it wet in the whirlpool. The second we add whole cone as a dry hop. Our base is a simple pale with a touch of rye spiciness to be seasonally appropriate with enough left to support the selected hops while otherwise existing to flaunt the yearís cropís nuances. Harvest 2012 was wet hopped with Citra from B.T. Loftus Ranches, Inc. and dry hopped with Amarillo from Virgil Gamache Farms. Drink it because it is a fresh taste of things to come.

Pours a slightly cloudy, dark golden orange color with apricot edges and a two finger frothy white head that very slowly settles into a lasting cap/ring. Great retention with large rings and streaks of soapy lacing coating the glass on the way down. Slightly spicy floral hop aroma with prominent resinous oils and juicy citrus/tropical fruit sweetness countered by a pale malt backbone. Was expecting more rye in the nose but itís kind of subtle with peppery spice. Some other subtle autumnal spices but mostly contains complex hop profile and sweet malt notes. Strong hints of ruby red grapefruit and orange peel along with caramel malt sweetness, toffee and biscuit. Fuller body than expected yet clean, crisp and easy to drink. rye presence up front is just strong enough giving it a peppery spiciness that doesnít overpower the other notes. The rye is complimented by a complex hop profile that gives off some dry, earthy bitterness and sweet fruit flavors. Rye followed by dank buds, grass and subtle pine needle along with strong grapefruit, mango, papaya and blood orange. Sweet malt backbone with a some caramel, bread and biscuit. Really well balanced and completely crushable. The rye isnít overpowering and the hops are delicately balanced by subtle malt flavor. This is a very nice beer from Carton. One that I could drink in large quantities. Maybe the best Iíve had from them up to this point.

2013 vintage. Growler from Buy Rite in Cranbury, NJ. Pours a pale yellow gold color with a small bubbly white head. Big citrus hop aroma is redolent of pine needles and grapefruit. Crisp toasted malt flavor has complex spicy citrus hop domination. Itís all about the Citra hops here. Wonderfully complex and flavorful.

UPDATED: DEC 3, 2012 Tap at Pour house last week, clearish gold pour with a medium white head. Aromas and taste are very ashy, grainy, pretty much no citra present in this one. My least favorite from Carton so far which kinda sucks since this nj brewer has been solid up to this point. I think this one was held onto way too long by the bar or the lines werent properly ran before serving so I will wait to try again then give a better rating. Cheers

Draft at Scottís. Poured a golden yellow with a lasting foamy white head. Aroma is loaded with a slight spiceyness, rye and carrow way seed, hint of cat piss. Flavor of dry hop cones, slight rye, wet crusts. Meh.

Growler from Spirits Unlimited (Pt. Pleasant, Nj) FRESH, hoppy aroma. Light yeollowish pour with a thin white head. Very drinkable ale! The rye notes are impressive. Overall, another outstanding offering from an up & coming local brewer!

Draft. Golden pour with white head. Light hop aroma tones. Flavor has both citra and Amarillo hop tones but has some malt back end.
