The backyard of our brewery has a mulberry tree that drops its fruit in the first days of summer. We moved into our building during early summer 2011, tracking a bright purple path through our new home with every laden step. It was then we decided: if mulberry was going to get that deep into the brewery, it probably should get into a beer as well. Stealing a process from Berliners, we let the lactics in a wheated mash sour up to a green apple/lemon level, accentuating the bright side of the mulberry profile. The barley of the malt bill is light continental two row, its kernel’s nuttiness playing to the softer, fruity component of the berries’ flavor, keeping the beer from flying too close to bright. Meant for quaffingg when there is no reason to avoid direct sunlight on balmy Summer days, drink Monkey Chased The Weasel because there is more sun than moon at the top of Summer.

Can shared at the Swamp Head Batch 600 release. Pours a purplish pink color with a creamy white head on top. Aroma of mulberries, sour vinegar, wheaty malts, and berliner like yeastiness. Flavor follows with big notes of mulberries--wow they go really well in this style--wheat malts, yeasty tart berliner notes, some lemon peel, and some floral notes. Really light bodied with high carbonation. While I’m not a fan of the style generally, this was very nice. I would have it again for sure.

Big can in a tulip. Pours pinkish amber with an off-white head. Aroma of light funkiness, some berries, light tartness, some pale and caramel malts, and some light fruits. Flavor the same with a nice blend. Average texture. A really cool beer.

On tap at Barcade. Milky yellow pour with a fleeting white head. Bouquet of urine stained pre-school class room. The bitter sting of turpentine and rancid inedible fruit. Below average body and mouthfeel. It’s almost like I just licked a couch on the side of the Jersey Turnpike.

Can. Slightly rosy pour. Smell is sulphuric farts. Flavo is the same until a few ounces go down and it becomes a mediocre sour beer.

This is a solid light, sour ale. It is cloudy orange and pretty much headless after a minute in the glass. Surprisingly, fresh cracked malt is the first thing I notice in the nose with some fruity overtones that imply tartness. This is very slightly sweet with a solid balancing tartness. The mulberry character is subtle and really only comes out as the glass comes to full temp but once it does it adds a nice roundness to the flavor. This is a medium bodied beer w/ vigorous carbonation. It finishes lightly tart w/ a lingering malty sweetness. Nothing about this really jumps out as me as being perfect but it drinks well from top to bottom.

Pours a hazy pinkish gold with no head. Aroma of wheat, lemons, lacto, slight berry note but very slight. Taste follows, not much of a berry presence but it’s still a great Berliner!

Can thanks to Dmac. Pours a hazy gold and pinkish hue with small frothy white head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is tart citrus, oak, and berries. Thin mouthfeel with nice tart lemon and berry with light dry finish. Very good.
