This NW style sour blond ale was barrel aged for 28 months before spending an additional two months on 300+ pounds of Black Cap raspberries: think Nouveau Boujoulais with blackberries. Vinous then sweet aromas of tart blackberries are the first to be noticed. Sharp, acidic notes of tart berries and leather on the palate lead to a sharp, dark berry presence and a finish with a prolonged dry fruit note. This limited draft-only offering is a blender favorite.

Draft at Bigwood 12/6/12 [8 of 11]. From notes (which are getting spottier and sloppier as the evening goes on). Aroma: Sweet raspberry. Sexy. Appearance: Deep purple (seriously, purple). Creamy-purple head, big bubbles clinging to the glass. Taste: Light, airy, blueberry in finish. Hint of smoke? Not nearly as much sour as I was expecting (but definitely enough to remind me it’s a sour beer and not some magical wine/cocktail/beer hybrid). Palate: medium/light body, moderately live carbonation. Overall: Another solid offering from Cascade. If I lived in Portland I would drink their beers constantly.

Bottle at Craft Hands. Thanks! Aroma is good, lightly medicinal, raspberry, great fruitiness, light bodied, bit of blackberry too. Nice. Very teeth coating.

Poured into a taster showing light brilliant red with no head. The nose shows moderately intense notes of light but tart raspberry. The palate is medium bodied and highly carbonated. A lot of raspberry flavors with a high tartness.

Looks like raspberry juice my grandmother gave me as a kid. Tons of black berries, moderately sour nose. Tons of sour blackberries, the fruits really shine with this beer. Nice beer, not uber complex but fruit is fantastic

A steady pour into my glass produces a three-finger thick, fizzy, pale purple tinged, pink head that disappears somewhat quickly. The beer is a deep purple stained color that shows a brilliantly clear, ruby-red hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of ripe berries; a mix of smooth raspberries, super blackberry notes, and some children’s aspirin even. There is perhaps a hint of lactic tartness, and maybe a hint of mustiness, but really the aroma is all about the fruit character.

Dry, tart tasting up front, with a medicinal / plastic berry like character from the middle through to the finish. Lingering berry skin notes add some tannic astringency and ripe fruit character. The flavor reminds me a bit of some sort of faux berry medicine, but without the sweetness. This has an initial effervescent carbonation to it, but that seems to evaporate pretty quickly. The body of this beer is light, even refreshing with little residual texture. Little of the base malt character comes through here, really the flavors focus on the fruit character, the lactic acidity, and some oak notes that add a touch of woodiness, a hint of spiciness, and an astringency that stands in for hop bitterness perhaps.

This is a simple, fruit focused sour. I like that the Blackcap raspberries are not as strong flavored as normal raspberries, that makes for a more balanced beer, but like many of the Cascade sour fruit beers, I find this a bit simplistic; the purely lactic fermenation is quite a bit too clean, and leads to a simplistic beer in the end. As a refreshing, tart, fruit focused beer though this is pretty good, especially since it is not really sweet.

Draught at Stone Liberty Station, San Dieo. "Sour Saturday" during SDBW 2015. Clear red/ruby beer with a small head. Lovely raspberry aroma, wild strawberries, citrus, funky, grapes, grapefruit, tart, some raisins. Wonderful sour raspberry flavor, earthy notes, wild strawberries, funky, blackberries, cherries, some leather. Amazing!

750ml corked bottle pours a reddish purple color with a finger and a half of fizzy pinkish head that settles quickly leaving no lacing on the glass. Aroma is raspberries and funk with some hints of red wine grapes and lemon. Taste is a very sour lemon with tart raspberries and a dry red wine finish. Light to medium bodied with abundant carbonation. Overall, another very sour ale, perhaps too much so, would be much better if sourness was toned back.

UPDATED: NOV 19, 2015 Watering Hole Cascade event. Pours a deep red to almost purple with a small pink head that dissipates fairly quickly. Huge blackberry nose with some light oak, berries and woody notes. This is quite well-balanced between fruity and tart. Not overly acidic at all. It is loaded with blackberry and blueberry flavor. There is a nice amount of tartness and a good oaky, dry finish. Awesome. Rerate: The nose still works for me but tried during a sour tasting, it really felt more one-dimensional that the first time. Still well-balanced, but a little boring.

750 bottle. Dark Red pour. Big Raspberry nose. Fruits are up front in the flavors, followed by a funky woody sour tart take over. Vinous mix of sweet fruits and a astringent dry finish. Damn good!
