COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This NW style sour ale blends wheat & blond ales that were oak aged in barrels for 6 mths, then additionally aged 4 mths on fresh blueberries. Huge herbal notes of dense blueberries in the nose give way to hints of oak & a dusty floral note. Rich earthy notes of dark fruit on the palate lead to a tart finish that dries out to a base note of blueberry skins.

750ml from Sam’s, Durham. Big pour, hugely bubblicious and grape juice hued. Bits of spotty lacing here and there, consistently lively carbonation. Nose is not too overwhelming but very pleasant nonetheless. Loads of oak and berry (sweeter than I expected, like a mature blueberry), with hints of lemon juice and a bit of wild yeast. Body is nice, as prickly carbonation dies down, and there’s an understated acetic quality on the tongue, very dry finish. Taste is nicely tart, giving the impression of a younger fruit than the nose suggests, with a healthy blueberry yogurt vibe in there too (lactobacillus?). I found it elegant, flavorful, extremely well balanced overall.

Beautiful purple, light people head. Nose is grape Flintstones vitamins, a little cheese. Flavor is grape vitamins, acidity is restrained compared to the apricot. Quite dry.

Bottle from a trade with UDBeernut. Pours reddish purple color with thin light pink head. Aroma of sour berries. Sour fruit flavor with some oak. Faint blueberry flavor, I was hoping for a stronger blueberry presence. Light to medium body with average carbonation. Thanks Art!

Tap at Cascade Barrel House. Pours dark, murky purplish with thin, dark pink head. Big tart blueberry, some oaky notes and slight mustiness. Big acetic punch up front, fresh berry, good dryness from the oak barrel. Well done.

2011 project bottle opened with a noce pop of the cork. Pour has a cherry red in color and a thin coat of off white head that fell right off. Aroma has real blueberry, oak, medium acidity, mild fruit sweetness, and berry skins. Mouth feel is light and there is medium carbonation. Flavor brings a surprising acid snap, blueberry skins, dry oak, mild blueberry, and a good pucker factor.

Bottle is trade. Pours out an odd reddish purple berry juice color with not much of a head. Aroma is of lots of fresh blueberries, funky tartness, light sweetness, Brett and mild vinegar notes. Taste is very blueberry forward, nailed that one, you know these blueberries were fresh. Funky Brett, some tart sourness, almost puckering tartness balanced nicely with more sweet/ tart fresh blueberries. Nice!

750ml C&C bottle. Ugly pour, light opaque maroon body with a smaller fizzy off white head. Aroma was blueberry muffin, cake batter, sour lemons, some odd Body Works blueberry hand sanitizer. Decent body, stronger bubbly carbonation, medium mouthfeel and a sour finish. Flavor is more sour than the aroma lets on. Blueberry, lemon, sourness, dry straw. Solid.

Batch 2012 Aroma is fairly sweet with some blueberries and light funk. There is a touch of a plastic phenolic character present. The blueberry has a bit of an artificial character. Low barrel character with a bit of alcohol spice. Pours a fairly clear red color with hint of a darker purple hue. Thin light pink head that recedes fairly quickly. Flavor starts fairly sweet with a jammy berry character. That recedes as the moderately strong acidity kicks in. The acidity brings in a moderate phenolic character. Light bitterness with a lingering acidity. The finish is acidic with a light fruitiness and funk. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium high carbonation. Light acidic astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall a nice beer but the blueberries taste a bit artificial with the plastic phenolic notes. The sweetness is a bit strong too and it could use a more complex funk character.
