On tap @ Cascade Barrel House. Pours translucent dark brown with reddish tint and thin head. Aroma is thin roasty malt quickly overtaken by mild buttery sour flavors. Taste is similar: mild dark roasty malt, followed by mellow tart finish. Not bad, but the difficulty in finding this may have made my expectations unreasonably high. Ultimately I’m not sure a porter is all that well suited to souring.

Finally popped this ’09. Has held up nicely. Clean rich garnet brown with a thin fizzy tan head. Big nose, dark fruits and some alcohol show with a noticeable acidity and touch of spice. A lot going on in the flavor, booze shows and the acidity is upfront with rich dark fruit tones on the finish. Medium bodied and warm on the way down

Most of the time not sure of sour porters, this ones not bad, cocoa and plenty of bourbon masks some of the sour.

From live barrel at Cascade Barrel House. 2011 vintage. Deep dark amber color. Aroma of port, dates, and vanilla. Taste is dates, vanilla, bourbon, oak, and tobacco. Definite alcohol warming. Finishes like an after-dinner liquor.

Bottled during a tasting. Pour dark black with tan head. Tastes malt, vinegar, umami. This beer is nicely balanced for a sour.

UPDATED: MAY 24, 2015 (Critique chaotique du extreme beer fest 2013): Un nez de cerise, une bouche de fruits confits, peu de tannins, arrière-goût de chocolat, bourbon. Superbe assemblage.

on tap at EBF Dark brown Nose is Oaky tart apples and white grapes Starts tart. Finishes oaky with grapes and cherries with smoke and boozy heat. It’s very hard to say its okay or not. Overall, a very boozy sour which is not desirable.

Healthy sample pour of deep dark thin liquid with faint khaki head. Nose is vinegar and sharp, with boozy notes and some sweet. As it warms, more caramel is noticed. Flavor is sharp and sour after warming, with plenty of balsamic and soy. Great boozy notes with almost a noticeable roast character... More than a basic Flemish... Anyway, this thing is good!

750ml bottle from cavemanlawyer, thanks James! 2009 Vintage. Pours a black body with an inch thick, fizzy and foamy, dark brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is tart and acidic with a sharper roast, dry oak, red wine, tannins, and a nice bourbon that opens up more as this warms. A bit funky with some chocolate, vinegar, hints of vanilla, and plums. Flavor is similar. Vinous and sour up front with a good amount of sharper roasts, dry oak, grape skins, tannins, vinegar, and a nice bourbon presence. Some chocolate and plums towards the end with hints of vanilla and spice before this finishes dry, sour, acidic, roasty, and woody with a light chocolate and vanilla note and pleasant bourbon aspect. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium body and a lively carbonation. Overall, a really well done beer. The intense sourness works well with the dry wood and roasts while the bourbon adds a pleasant complexity. Nice one.

Bottle @ Christers. Pours dark brown with a light brown head. Aroma is sour, winelike, oak, wood, light vinegar, dark fruits, just a hint of bourbon. Flavor is sour winelike, vinegar, dark fruits, wet wood, oak, notes of chocolate, bourbon, tartness. Thin to medium body, lively carbonation, sour dry finish. Very nice , allthough abit strange and all over the place. 040213
