OLD GABF rating. Dark brown with tan head. Aroma of vanilla and caramel, citrus, and bourbon. It tastes wine like though despite the look and its roasty caramel, vanilla flavors. The vinous character comes with cherry, lacto, and lighter citrus, and grapes all covered up in bourbon. YES!

Rating #1639 - #CBC2015 Beer 24 - On tap at Cascade - Pours a rich opaque black that is simply medieval. Aroma is Brett, mild roasted coffee, rich oak and vanilla. Medium high carbonation, full bodied, and high alcohol warmth. More roasty, coffee espresso notes, soaked in Bourbon, and highlighted with a blast of Brett sourness. Wondrous. #5whore

Draft pour at the Barrel house, out of the love barrel. I remember getting a group together last ago to try this, and somehow forgot to rate. This was not a beer that deserved to be rated on any memory at all, and I’m not sure if such beer exists. Near black pour with a sticky foam lacing. Soft roast and dark fruit aroma. Flavor has a nice roast to it, with dark fruit, some chocolate, and just enough bourbon to know its there. Lingering roast finishes this nicely. Awesome sour.

Shared at a tasting hosted by Steve Hackley on September 25. Thanks Steve! This was poured from a 750 mL bottle, Project 2011. The pour is a nice dark brown color, crystal clear, with a good ruby or garnet shining through. This thing does look like a porter. There is a nice thick khaki colored head that dissipates quickly, as it’s quite carbonated. The aromas are great. There is a big barrel presence up front. Oak, vanilla, and dark fruits all seem to take the forefront. There is a good tartness happening on the back end, and it lets you know it was supposed to be sour, though it’s not there at all. Excellent porter qualities, and no real sourness. The flavor mimics this. There is a good roasted malt, caramel, dark fruit, and a light chocolate in front of the barrel. The oak comes in toward the end and offers a touch of vanilla. The tartness is more of an afterthought in the flavor, but it’s there. The mouth feel is lighter and hugely carbonated. I was surprised by this. It definitely hurts the thickness. The aftertaste is lingeringly roasty, with dark fruit throughout and a nice tartness. This is an excellent beer, but has the potential to be phenomenal.

A steady pour into my tulip glass produces a 1/2-finger thick, light brown tinged, fairly quick disappearing head. The beer is a dark, concentrated amber / concentrated brown color that shows a brilliantly clear, ruby hue to it (similar to Port) when held up to the light. The aroma smells strongly of the Barrel influence and concentrated, ripe fruit; fig syrup, prunes, browned dates, lots of vanillin, toasted coconut, Brandy, some warm alcohol, touches of caramelized cherries, molasses, mellowed woody oak, and a lightly tart backdrop that helps accentuate the fruit character. As the beer warms up a floral, cherry leaning, rich fruitiness becomes more apparent in the aroma.
Only lightly carbonated, and pretty light bodied, especially for a beer of this strength; still there is a bit of stickiness and viscosity here that would otherwise be more noticeable if not for the alcohol and acidity. There is lots of aged malt flavors that lean towards sherry, and a caramelized, sweet nuttiness. The finish has some spicy oak notes that linger on the tongue, and this mixes with some spicy, warm alcohol flavors; this actually hides the alcohol quite well for a beer of this strength though. Flavors of malty prunes, brandy basted raisins, caramelized dates, nutty brown malt, toasted / roasted malt, a burnt grain touch towards the finish, as well as a soft spice character that reminds me of allspice, some cinnamon, hints of nutmeg, and lots of vanilla. The acidity is light for a sour beer, though much of this is may be because of all the aged malt, and residual sweetness that helps to keep this beer balanced.
I really like the Sherry & Port overtones that this beer has taken on. I am enjoying this more than I had expected, luckily the Bourbon barrel character has integrated quite well and is only a contributing note to the overall profile of this beer. This is definitely a sipping beer, and as such, it achieves a really nice balance between fruit, aged malt, light acidity, barrel character, and roast character.

Dégustée chez Alexandre Mathieu. Cheers! Servie trop froide, la bière s’est lentement réchauffée pour révéler un côté complexe et agréable. Nez typique de Cascade, de bourbon chaud, de bois, d’épices et de sucre roux caramélisé. En bouche le liquide est extrêmement acide. La gorge me brûle tant le liquide est vinaigré. Beau parfum de vanille qui prend le dessus avec la température qui augmente. Trop intense pour moi, cette bière va trop loin dans toutes les directions à la fois.

750 shared and poured a medium brown with no head. the aroma was a mild sourness, dark fruit and what I called an almost rootbeer flavor. but much more complex. lots of nose power. the flavor was so smooth and mild. but the flavor in general was complex. plenty of sour and dark fruit and total yumminess. second favorite from cascade...

Bottle served in a tulip. 2009 vintage, opened in early 2015 for a special occasion. Big pop and then it starts to gush. Poured quickly without loosing a drop. Lovely murky mid-dark brown pour with a decent sized light brown head. Monster nose: Vanilla, bourbon, dark fruit and heavy cinnamon. Also somewhat floral. Medium plus sour and mildly sweet on the palate. Medium body, decent carbonation, and a tart, light tannic finish. Complex, powerful and warming. Incredible showing especially considering it’s age.
