This NW-style sour ale is a special treat from the blenders. We took a 20 month old Thai cinnamon version of the Bourbonic and aged it a further four months on Bing cherries. Dark cherries, Bourbon and spices greet you in the nose. Big, rich, dark cherries, dates, oak, leather and tobacco dance on the palate. Deep cherry notes, dark fruits and a warming Bourbon flavor finish this off as only the Bourbonic can.

Sample at the Barrel House. Cloudy ruddy-brown color with a medium light beige head that diminishes gradually to a film. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of bourbon, dark fruit, yeast and malt. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, black cherry, earthy yeast and malt. The finish is oaky with a bourbon and cherry aftertaste. Good beer all around.

Live barrel pour on tap at the Cascade Barrelhouse (Portland, OR). Exciting find. Pours a deeper brownish red ruby hue. Darker middle, murky rusty brown glow with some gentle carmelized toasty reddish glow onto the edges. Frothy tannish head atop shows a mellow ringer and faint skant layer with ok lacing. Aromas are tart cherries and toast, a middling lactic appeal grows, some firmer punchy lactic life is lemon, dark fruit and black cherry sourness, yogurt and earth, a bit of cocoa and tobacco. Jabs of bourbon barrel, tannic oak. Initial is fuzzy and sour, potent sour black and red cherries, a bit of cranberry, raspberry and growing firm lactic appeal proves this the most sour offering on the day. Earth, toast, firmer oak and gentle spirit barrel, vanillin elements incorporate well enough. A bit toasty, bitter and roasty with some Balsamic play. Nothing acidic but a potent sourness cuts through the firmer base welll, a touch thinned and firmly sour. Lemon, sour cherries and earth meet twangy yogurt, toast and warming barrel presence. Finish offers fuzzy lactic sourness, some toast, residual vanillin and spirit barrel with more cherryskin, seedy fruit and a bit of Bourbon flavor and toasty appeal. Wild stuff, the cherries really elevate it while offering a more potent lactic acidity more found in many of the classic bottle offerings. Jabs of tannic cherry, a bit of fruit, firmer sourness and mellow toasty, subtle to middling barrel trail out. Tasty stuff, potent dark fruit and cherry sour nose with barrel compliments, pretty pour and a beer that delivers good sourness, complexity and a flavorful and drinkable experience with a more hideable ABV tag.

On draft at Hunahpu day 2015. Pours a stout brown with a thin tan head. Nose is some chocolate, some leather, vinegar, tartness, a ton of cherry, and some dates. Flavor is similar with chocolate, leather, lots of cherry, sour cherries, vinegar, lots of bourbon, spice, and love. Another sour bruiser from Cascade.

EBF. Pours a dark brown with no head and no lacing. Nose is of cherry, cough syrup and bourbon. Taste is intensely sour (classic Cascade) with some fruits soak in bourbon and a lot of vinegar. Body is medium and carbonation moderate. Overall I thought it was OK but still a little harsh.

sample @ EBF 2015. milky dark brown orange without a head, or any lacing. bourbon and cherries - separately; cascade signature - cherry lemony citric - kind of puckering; sweet brown malts, some bugs - no funk really, loads of spices along warming alcohol notes. light carbonation, medium to full body - oily and thick, boozy tingling and spicy finish. unbalanced and aggressive offering. blah.

EBF Boston mars 2015.
