Deep black in color with tannish head... Aroma of roasted malts, oak, chocolate... Flavor is exceedingly complex, more so than their other stouts, notes of oak, bourbon, chocolate, but dominated by the roasted malts... Delicious

A deep dark stout with a thin lacing dark brown head. In aroma, nice coffee and bitter chocolate and woody notes, grassy hops, nice. In mouth, a bitter chocolate with light licorice, molasses, grassy hops, sustained alcohol, delicious. On tap at Portland brewery, Oct. 7 2012.

On tap, I’m not sure who ordered this and then decided to orphan it in favour of one of the sours, but I picked up the slack. Super-dark, creamy beige crown. Rich roasty aroma with burnt sugar and chocolate, roasty palate, soy sauce, bitter chocolate, dark caramel, oaky nuances. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel. A nice shift-of-gears for the palate after a few sours.

On tap at the Portland Holiday Ale Fest. Colour... as black as black can get with no head. Nose... some teriyaki, initially, then burn cotton candy and DARK chocolate. Palate... more of that burnt cotton candy comes in to play then there’s a massive wave of bittersweet Dutch chocolate (Droste??), char ash, wet earth and a gentle feel of CO2 as it works its way along the back of the palate. I tasted this six months ago and I recall getting my taster mug sample, then just getting back in line and sipping while I waited for more :0>

On tap at Brouwer’s Big Wood. Pours solid black with virtually no head. Aroma of soured fruits, apricot, strawberry, wood, roasted malts. Flavour of roasted malts, wood, some soured fruits with a light smoked finish. Roasty and nice.

On tap at Brouwer’s for Big Wood, pours pitch black with a small brown head. Aroma of wood / bourbon, some acidic notes and roasted malt. Flavour is quite roasty, with some tart notes (maybe some sour fruit barrels), light espresso and chocolate. Not a fan of the tart barrel qualities but it’s well-made.

Draft at special brews. Pours jet black with loose dark tan bubbles. Big sweet nose of bourbon, wood, chocolate, and plums. Creamy thick body with soft carb. Roast, chocolate, plums, and bourbon on the mid palate. Long roasty coffee finish. Delicious.

A: The beer pours essentially black in color with a thin tan head. S: A really nice nose on this. A strong mocha character to it with plenty of roast and molasses. The amount of chocolate is quite impressive. Also some mild vanilla and licorice notes to it. T: The flavor features quite a bit of roasted malt flavor along with a nice sweetness of vanilla, toffee, and molasses. As with the aroma, there is a heavy dose of dark chocolate with a pretty good helping of coffee as well. M: The body is full with smooth, medium carbonation. O: Easily the best beer I had at Beachwood last night. Really good stuff.

On tap. Pours with a thick black body and a tan hued head. Aromas of bourbon, wood, sweet chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, oak and fudge. Very nice, strong, somewhat typical (albeit very good imperial stout aroma). Flavors are huge (really only 8.8%?!). Chewy, cocoa powder, a bit dusty, fudge, bourbon, oak, biscuit, cookie. Clean fermentation, minimal esters. Finishes a bit drier than I would expect. Low carbonation. Very good!

Tap @ Bailey’s Taproom 4th Anniversary... A non-infected Cascade beer aged in Bourbon and Pinot barrels. Poured pitch black with a tan head. Slight bit of dactyl on the nose. Fortunately that all disappeared in the flavor with lots of roast, oak, malt sweetness with hints of whiskey heat, and a mild pinot/wine-like character towards the finish. Not overly boozy.
