COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This live barrel of NW style sour red ale was initially aged for six months in French oak wine barrels, then additionally aged on elderberries. Sharp wine, dark raisins, red grapes and cereal notes greet you on the nose. Tart dark fruit and grapes on the palate lead to a sparkling crisp dry finish with hints of fresh elderberries and grape skins.

Bottle shared at Jack the Sipper tasting, big thanks to Bucey D for the OR hook up, 12/05/14. Dark mahogany brown with moderate light beige spotting. Nose is tangy soured berry fruit, floral rinse, peach, light toffee, candied orange peel. Taste comprises bitter orange marmalade, perfumed notes, dank tropical fruits, floral tones, elderberry twang, sharp gooseberries. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Solid sour work.

Bottle - 2011 project - dark brown/lavender poor with a modest fine bubbled off white head into this glass. Retention is modest here - the nose is modest ascetic, florals, moving to dark fruit and berry notes, caramel and cola barrel presence here. The flavor profile is Initial tart berry, earthy oak moving to light vinegar. This one has some fade on it near the center, finishing with caramel and mineral water. It starts off nice but doesn’t quite make it to the finish line

Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Hazy dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is light and crispy. A Belgian red sort of sourness. Touch of elderberry. Dry finish with a tangy sour linger.

Bottle thanks to Bruce. It pours darkest brown with a small fizzy tan head. The nose is fresh, candy, sherbet, elderberry, blackcurrant, jam and more candy cane. The taste is crisp, tart, jammy, earthy, citrus peel, lemon peel, elderberry, wood and lemon sherbet with a dry, tart finish. Medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. Crisp, tart, fruity and tasty.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Bruce. Pours clear, blue-brown with a froth, beige head. Leathery dark berries on the nose, some decent funk, toasted wood. Medium sweet flavor with assertive tart berries, cleansing acidity, light herbs, pepper. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Finishes with strong acidic burn, some further ripe berries, a bit of tangy wood, a bit of alcohol warmth. A punchy Cascade sour; or, in other words, a Cascade sour.

Bottle shared at RBWG meet and greet. Poured purple with little head. Aroma is fruity, I’m assuming elderberry, sour, acidic, touch of barrel. Flavor is like the aroma with a bit more tartness than sourness. Palate is so acidic thst it almost burns. Better have antacids on hand for this one, in an enjoyable way.

A - pours murky purply/red cola brow. Very little head. S - nice aromas of the dark berries right out of the bottle. As it settles, the sour brown comes out. Brown sugar, acetic notes, tart cherries, vanilla, wet oak, and dark fruits. M - nice and tart. Sweet on the lips and at the back end. Medium light body. High carb. Dry crisp end. T - this is a nice rendition of a sour brown. The sour blonde blended in, The berries and grape notes really add to it. Oude bruin first. Vanilla, tart cherries, dark fruits roll right into acetic notes and then the berries and white grape notes come through. End is dry and crisp. Lemon juice, and grape skins. O - The front end is sour brown, the palate and back is nice light fruited sour. Works. 4.0

My Bottom Line:
Vinous fruitiness develops plenty of tartness alongside this Sour Ale’s cheese-y leanings, creating a memorable funky brew.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the purplish dark red.
-Like many Cascade Sour Ales, the intensity level is high, but the flavor profile is slick, well executed.
-The fruitiness could easily pass for black grapes, blackberries, etc. Doesn’t taste like the elderberry character I am used to.
-I have trouble getting away from the pediococcus which seems to appear in a few of their Sour Ale’s aromas. Luckily, I don’t find it nearly as bothersome in the flavor profile.

Bottle.
