COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This live barrel of NW style sour red ale was initially aged for six months in French oak wine barrels, then additionally aged on elderberries. Sharp wine, dark raisins, red grapes and cereal notes greet you on the nose. Tart dark fruit and grapes on the palate lead to a sparkling crisp dry finish with hints of fresh elderberries and grape skins.

Draught at Cascade Brewing Barrel House, Aromas of sour pickled fruit and rotting berries. Muddy reddish-brown color, flat, some good lacing. Very sharp initial, dark fruit; peppery mid palate with some acidity coming out; tart and lingering tongue cleaning finish. Thin-medium body. Very nice, in its own way. Doesn’t have the big sour kick that so many of the others have.

On draft at Cascade Barrel House. Nice sour, not overbearing or too bold in any way. Really nice balance.

On tap at the Barrel House - Pours red and dark brown with a tan ring of head. Nose is ripe berries, really malty nose, light tartness, and nice caramel. Taste is lots of the same flavors--smooth berry and vanilla with citrus rind finish, with medium tartness. Big and carbonated with a big fluffy body.

Draught at the Barrel House. Deep crimson with brown, lace. Nose of cherry, yogurt, acid, light vinegar, berry. Nicely sour flavor, vinegar, cherry, can’t really find the elderberry (what do they taste like anyway?). Good, though not as great as many of the others.

Tap at the Barrel House. Pours ruddy and plummy with an off-white head. Elderberry aroma. Full bodied. Flavor is darkly sour with red/elderberry flavor. The flavor is a bit mixed with fruit and something wood or similar. Quite nice.

On tap at Cascade Brewing, pours a dark amber / mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma of berries and sour fruits - not much else. Flavour of sour / tart berries, slight sweetness to balance. Nothing that standout-ish here, but it’s well-made. Lingering tartness. Decent.

Amber and red pour with a small white head. Wine aroma with plenty of dark fruits and the taste is just as good with some tart blackberries and a nicey fruity finish. Very good.

Sample at Stone Sour Ale Fest 2012. Clear dark ruby color, with a small off white head. Sweet fruit, berry, vinegar, tart acidity, wood, hints of elderberry, vinous, and barrel character. This one was well balanced, fruity, oak, and enough - but not too much sourness. Might be my favorite Cascade of the day.

Dark amber with little head. Elderberry is very subtle -- never would have guessed it if that wasn’t what it was called -- but it’s still very nice.

Reddish in color with small head to it. I don’t get all that much elderberry, but there is some grape and nondescript berry aroma to it. Lightly floral with plenty of wood and acidity. The flavor is lightly acetic, but still maintains a good lactic character as well. Plenty of fruit, some spicy wood, light tannins, and a bit of booze. Really different.
