COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This live barrel of NW style sour red ale was initially aged for six months in French oak wine barrels, then additionally aged on elderberries. Sharp wine, dark raisins, red grapes and cereal notes greet you on the nose. Tart dark fruit and grapes on the palate lead to a sparkling crisp dry finish with hints of fresh elderberries and grape skins.

My Bottom Line:
Vinous fruitiness develops plenty of tartness alongside this Sour Ale’s cheese-y leanings, creating a memorable funky brew.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the purplish dark red.
-Like many Cascade Sour Ales, the intensity level is high, but the flavor profile is slick, well executed.
-The fruitiness could easily pass for black grapes, blackberries, etc. Doesn’t taste like the elderberry character I am used to.
-I have trouble getting away from the pediococcus which seems to appear in a few of their Sour Ale’s aromas. Luckily, I don’t find it nearly as bothersome in the flavor profile.

Bottle.

(Rating #5467)

2011 vintage. Pours a cola brown color with a light tan head. Aromas of sour dark fruit, oak, oak and more oak. Taste is initially tart, with some yogurt and lacto elements making their presence felt. Maybe it’s the extra age this one has on it, but I really like this beer. Not mind blowingly tart or sour, but very refined. A nice balance of oak, sweet and sour. Dark berry presence is felt. Finishes semi dry with a small pucker. Alcohol is completely hidden, I could drink this shit all night. Very good.

Pours a deep purple brown color with a finger of purple eggshell foam. The nose is full of welches grape soda, elderberry, earthy malt and some deep raisin. The palate follows the nose with a beautiful front end full of juice grape, elderberry notes, as it dries out the earthy malt and yeast profile sneak in and add complexity to the finish but also a little strangeness lingers in the finish. Really tasty but the finish keeps me from loving this brew to the fullest !

2011 Bottle, thanks jack. Deep blueberry reddish brown with a thin, light mocha off white head. Nose is blueberry/raspberry/cherry/pomegranate hybrid with a puckering tartness. Lovely. This is yummy. Sorta malty at first, with a strong darker fruit character, and ends with a tart, salty, almost balsamic oaky character. Really excellent and one of my favorite Cascade sours to date. Less bracingly sour, but more complex and interesting than others I’ve had. And so much different from Mamouche, the only other elderberry beer I have had.

Bottle shared by Corbit, thanks! Pours a hazy dark amber with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of nice sour dark berries with a touch of funk. Flavor is full of sour dark berries with a good amount of acid and a hint of funk.

Thanks Sean for sending me this bottle after his trip to Portland. Enjoyed on a special day at 60F in some stemware

A - Looks like Raisin juice. Very dark, oak red hues. 7-Up like soda fizz appears and fades.

S - Smell is great. Dark fruit, earthy and woody. Totally get the biscuit and cornbread as well. But the grape jelly like concord grapes just shines through.

T - Pretty Floral up front. Sweet finish. This isn’t a sour beer really but it does make my mouth water. It is sour but not in any vinegar way. it’s very clean. Blueberries and grape jelly and cheap grocery store wine.

M - Thin and not doing much. The soda pop fizz leads to a disappointing mouthfeel.

O - Still, an impressive beer. the wine barrel + elderberry lends something nice. One I’d have again.

Bottle: thanks, Kevin! Dark-ish, brown-ish, faintly indigo tinted brown color with barely any head at all, only a very timid beige collar. Aroma includes notes of both sweet & tart elderberries... Elderberries give off some "dark berry" notes, along the lines of blackberry, currant, & even mild blueberry. Mild vanilla & oak in the finish with a touch of vinegar & acidity as well. Taste is quite sour, nice & tart with a big, sweet berry undertaking. Elderberry, blackberry, & a strong vinegar note mid-palate to finish. Good amount of oak & even some more vanilla... Probably one of the least acidic brews from Cascade overall. Another very nice brew from Cascade with no hint of the 8%+ ABV.
