This live barrel of NW style sour red ale was initially aged for six months in French oak wine barrels, then additionally aged on elderberries. Sharp wine, dark raisins, red grapes and cereal notes greet you on the nose. Tart dark fruit and grapes on the palate lead to a sparkling crisp dry finish with hints of fresh elderberries and grape skins.

2011 Bottle, thanks jack. Deep blueberry reddish brown with a thin, light mocha off white head. Nose is blueberry/raspberry/cherry/pomegranate hybrid with a puckering tartness. Lovely. This is yummy. Sorta malty at first, with a strong darker fruit character, and ends with a tart, salty, almost balsamic oaky character. Really excellent and one of my favorite Cascade sours to date. Less bracingly sour, but more complex and interesting than others I’ve had. And so much different from Mamouche, the only other elderberry beer I have had.

Bottle shared by Corbit, thanks! Pours a hazy dark amber with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of nice sour dark berries with a touch of funk. Flavor is full of sour dark berries with a good amount of acid and a hint of funk.

Thanks Sean for sending me this bottle after his trip to Portland. Enjoyed on a special day at 60F in some stemware

A - Looks like Raisin juice. Very dark, oak red hues. 7-Up like soda fizz appears and fades.

S - Smell is great. Dark fruit, earthy and woody. Totally get the biscuit and cornbread as well. But the grape jelly like concord grapes just shines through.

T - Pretty Floral up front. Sweet finish. This isn’t a sour beer really but it does make my mouth water. It is sour but not in any vinegar way. it’s very clean. Blueberries and grape jelly and cheap grocery store wine.

M - Thin and not doing much. The soda pop fizz leads to a disappointing mouthfeel.

O - Still, an impressive beer. the wine barrel + elderberry lends something nice. One I’d have again.

Bottle: thanks, Kevin! Dark-ish, brown-ish, faintly indigo tinted brown color with barely any head at all, only a very timid beige collar. Aroma includes notes of both sweet & tart elderberries... Elderberries give off some "dark berry" notes, along the lines of blackberry, currant, & even mild blueberry. Mild vanilla & oak in the finish with a touch of vinegar & acidity as well. Taste is quite sour, nice & tart with a big, sweet berry undertaking. Elderberry, blackberry, & a strong vinegar note mid-palate to finish. Good amount of oak & even some more vanilla... Probably one of the least acidic brews from Cascade overall. Another very nice brew from Cascade with no hint of the 8%+ ABV.

Reviewed 04AUG12 Nice pretty dark rose colored beer with little/no foam and a high degree of clarity. Nose is just as expected, I dig the elderberry - herbal, floral and fruity like a blend of blueberries, soil, spices, some lavender like tones atop a leathery prune skin. Hints of peppercorn. The flavor comes through with reserved tart for the brewery and a good dose of aromatic and infectious flavors which are rich and robust with delicacy at the same time. Of fruit flavored sours, this may be my favorite choice of fruit and flower. Medium bodied with moderate carb and a slick finish. I like this beer, I like this beer a lot. ’11 bottle from John - thanks! Dark purple/red color with a nice froth of light tan foam. Heavy red wine in the aroma with oak, tart, sour, and grain. Taste is sharply tart with lemon, red wine, darker fruit sour, and grinding sour through the finish. Clean, dry mouthfeel. Nice beer.

Cascade sours are simple but great. Always great fruit flavor which reminds me of blackberrys with some dark cherry notes. The base beer has heavy lactic tartness and some woody and tannic vinous notes. I love it.
