This live barrel of NW style sour red ale was initially aged for six months in French oak wine barrels, then additionally aged on elderberries. Sharp wine, dark raisins, red grapes and cereal notes greet you on the nose. Tart dark fruit and grapes on the palate lead to a sparkling crisp dry finish with hints of fresh elderberries and grape skins.

Cascade sours are simple but great. Always great fruit flavor which reminds me of blackberrys with some dark cherry notes. The base beer has heavy lactic tartness and some woody and tannic vinous notes. I love it.

Bottle shared by Seth. Brown pour with a kaki head. Mild sour berry aromas. Mild sour berry notes, that I assume are elderberries. Muted caramel and woody undercurrents. Somewhat bitter aftertaste. A rare miss by Cascade.

On tap at Cascade. dark brown-orange. This was my favorite of the sour Cascades I tried. Aroma is berry jammy, dark fruit, tart. Taste port and dark fruit but more of background than tawny port. Currants, pepper, medium even sour. Awesome. Little more well rounded than the Kriek I tried at same time (which was also very nice). 8.6

I donít want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper. I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

Bottle shared at Seanís Tasting (Ann Arbor, MI). Pours a deeper brownish hue, good haziness and darkness in the body sits and throughout. A frothy offwhite head near tannish atop stays as a filmy thicker layer, sticks around and laces well. Some brownish orange glow on the edges and bottom. Aromas are tart and lactic, lemony and yogurty with some citrus, elderberry, touches of white grape. A bit toasty and biscuity, some carmelized malts. A bit more oak, vanilla, and some tannic elements. Initial is sour, richly lactic with florals and a good deal of lemon, some richer yogurt and sourness. Wet oak, some vanillin, toast and toffee malts really die behind. Some sour citrus, fruit, and apparently elderberry. The lactic swipe hits pretty firmly up front, tapers out well. Some vanilla, yogurt, pretty sour elderberry and lemony lactic life into the backend, a bit sharp and perhaps a bit acidic at times in the backend. Finish is dry, berryskin, some white grape and subtle white peach sourness grows. Pretty sour, good impressive flavors overall. Some oak, richer lactic elements, a bit of toastiness at times. Pretty solid.

Bottle:   Deep caramel, a little muddy, moderate foamy tannish head, nice lacing.   Sour nose, barrel aged, wood, kriek, a little vinous on the nose.   A little cheese, and some unripened gooseberries.   Perhaps similar to elderberries?   Sour and dry up front, woody, but not as complex as the nose suggested.   Very dry this one is.   Very light unripened gooseberries.   Donít know that I have ever had an Elderberry?   Good, solid, but not one of their better ones.

Sampled at the Barrel House. I can never remember what colour an elderberry is, but the beer itself was a murky brown with a ring of head leaving some lace. Tasted and smelled quite earthy, foresty and retained some nice berry character. One of the most intriguing Cascade offerings I enjoyed.

Bottle shared with Brian - thanks to Sean for this one! pours cloudy brown with a medium tan creamy head that dissipates with nice lacing. Aroma is tart fruity, lemon, oak, funk. Flavor is medium tart with some initial sweetness that fades to dry in the finish. Fruity, with distinct notes of elderberry, which I know cause I used to pick them as a kid in Wisconsin. Medium body, champagnelike mouthfeel. A very nice sour. I enjoyed this one.
