This live barrel of NW style sour red ale was initially aged for six months in French oak wine barrels, then additionally aged on elderberries. Sharp wine, dark raisins, red grapes and cereal notes greet you on the nose. Tart dark fruit and grapes on the palate lead to a sparkling crisp dry finish with hints of fresh elderberries and grape skins.

Brilliant lactic sour aroma with dark fruit and oaky in there as well. Flavor is dark fruit, oaky, woody, and quite sour. Maybe 7 or 8 of 10 sour. Another great by cascade. Almost has some whiskey like flavors at the end, even though I know it isn't aged in whiskey barrels. Very dark, almost opaque color. Very full flavored. Really awesome. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Reviewed 04AUG12 Nice pretty dark rose colored beer with little/no foam and a high degree of clarity. Nose is just as expected, I dig the elderberry - herbal, floral and fruity like a blend of blueberries, soil, spices, some lavender like tones atop a leathery prune skin. Hints of peppercorn. The flavor comes through with reserved tart for the brewery and a good dose of aromatic and infectious flavors which are rich and robust with delicacy at the same time. Of fruit flavored sours, this may be my favorite choice of fruit and flower. Medium bodied with moderate carb and a slick finish. I like this beer, I like this beer a lot. Bottle shared with Brian - thanks to Sean for this one! pours cloudy brown with a medium tan creamy head that dissipates with nice lacing. Aroma is tart fruity, lemon, oak, funk. Flavor is medium tart with some initial sweetness that fades to dry in the finish. Fruity, with distinct notes of elderberry, which I know cause I used to pick them as a kid in Wisconsin. Medium body, champagnelike mouthfeel. A very nice sour. I enjoyed this one.

On tap at Cascade. dark brown-orange. This was my favorite of the sour Cascades I tried. Aroma is berry jammy, dark fruit, tart. Taste port and dark fruit but more of background than tawny port. Currants, pepper, medium even sour. Awesome. Little more well rounded than the Kriek I tried at same time (which was also very nice). 8.6

Bottle from Torst, Brooklyn. Pours a deep purple amber pour with an off white head that leaves plenty of lace. Aromas of earthy tones, raisins, berries, chocolate and oak. Very complex nose. Taste is upfront sweet berries - blueberries, raisins and grapes with a dark/sweet malt backing. Oak and balsamic mainly coming through. Fucking complex. fucking awesome beer

Dark amber beer. The nose is very fruity and fresh. A touch of barrel character adds light vanilla notes and a bit of vineous complexity. Soft tannins in here as well that keep it interesting. Tart and lactic keep the beer very bright and fruity. A bit of lingering earthiness. Damn delicious stuff.

Stone Sour Fest. Pours a brown to slightly purple with little white head. Aroma is very fruity berry. Taste is sour berry with it being hard to define the elderberry but it is there. Very nice sour balance and something I’d love to get a bigger glass of.

My buddy Mike shared this with me. Thanks Man! Hey we didn’t sit down and really analyzed this beer. We just hung out for a few and enjoyed it. It was very tasty. A dark sour red. A great ring of lasting foam. Plenty of sour. Classic Cascade of course. Fruity berry notes but not a lot. Nice nuanced barrel notes. Not a bright sour more rustic.

Cascade sours are simple but great. Always great fruit flavor which reminds me of blackberrys with some dark cherry notes. The base beer has heavy lactic tartness and some woody and tannic vinous notes. I love it.

2011 Bottle, thanks jack. Deep blueberry reddish brown with a thin, light mocha off white head. Nose is blueberry/raspberry/cherry/pomegranate hybrid with a puckering tartness. Lovely. This is yummy. Sorta malty at first, with a strong darker fruit character, and ends with a tart, salty, almost balsamic oaky character. Really excellent and one of my favorite Cascade sours to date. Less bracingly sour, but more complex and interesting than others I’ve had. And so much different from Mamouche, the only other elderberry beer I have had.
