3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 MaxxDaddy (306) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - APR 9, 2008
Bottle shared by beastiefan2k. Pours a hazy dark red with flesh-colored head. Aroma has some cherries and acetic acid. Taste is a bit tart with more cherry flavor than the aroma may suggest. Lively mouthfeel and a finish that’s slightly astringent, but in a good way. Tasty stuff.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 goldtwins (4320) - Nesconset, New York, USA - APR 7, 2008
Poured a hazy brown color with a reddish tint and small off-white head. The aroma had mild notes of tart cherries, hints of raw dough and something a little odd that I can’t put my finger on. The flavor was on the tart side but could have used more of it. Light cherry taste with hints of leather. Light to medium bodied.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 auerbrau (2665) - Peace Dale, Rhode Island, USA - APR 6, 2008
750ml Bottle, thanks to acrdz. Subtle cheese and dark cherry aroma. Light. Pungent. Pours deep red with orange tint. Rim in fluffy whitish rose. Flavor is dry, dusty and excruciatingly lactic-sour. Alcohol somehow peaks through. Light cherry flavor really gets buried by carbonation and acidity. Not well balanced. Evaporates quickly on the palate. Really, really dry. Puckering. Just not well executed.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 beastiefan2k (1920) - Lawrence (formely NYC), Kansas, USA - APR 5, 2008
UPDATED: SEP 6, 2009 Thanks to hannont and 11026, The pour is very murky (I think I almost see little pits) with a medium head that fades. Aroma is very musty, thick, cherry without a lot of sweetness. Some syrupy strawberry jam there as well. I wouldn’t say sour just very earthy. Taste is sweet fruits with just some light sourness at the back end. Its very easy to drink and the light sourness lingers for a good while tickling the cheeks. Nice introductory sour beer I would say.
Had a recent batch that was more sour but had an overwhelming diacetyl, making it undrinkable basically. Wont change the score because of one bad bottle but something to track.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 puzzl (3093) - New York, New York, USA - APR 5, 2008
Shared by Beastiefan2k. Thanks. Aroma is very nice, kind of light, but complex, with cherry and cinnamon, birch and sarsaparilla. Carbonation is a bit too much, but a woody rootiness is very well done. A nice attempt for an American lambic, getting pretty close, but still some ground to cover. Needs more sourness.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 kmweaver (3046) - Santa Rosa, California, USA - APR 5, 2008
UPDATED: OCT 31, 2008 Rerate of the upcoming 2008 batch to be released in bottles. Gorgeous aroma, highly vinous throughout; much better development and fruitiness overall than the previous bottle I sampled. 8.4.8.4.15=3.9.
750mL bottle, courtesy of acrdz. Thanks, Mike! Pours a murky, brownish raspberry color; light tan head with patchy lacing. Diacetyl butter, tart cherries, and some pitty red fruits in the aroma; the butter isn’t a pleasant addition here, but the fruit’s good. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: less butter than in the aroma; plenty of mildly tart cherries and pits and some other red fruits showing through; reasonably dry; well-carbonated. Medium finish, showing pitty red cherries and dusty red fruits; no butter. 6.4.7.4.12=3.3
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 ryan (3068) - Beltsville, Maryland, USA - APR 5, 2008
Courtesy of acrdz. Cloudy ruby red body with a small beige head. Cherry yogurt nose with some doughy malts. The flavor is lightly sweet, lightly tart with cherry, lactic acid, light caramel and grainy malt. Medium body is round with moderate carbonation.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 3fourths (6400) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - APR 5, 2008
750ml bottle thanks to 11602. Bit of a pasty lactic nose, stenchy feet and sour creamed cherries. Prickly, moderately sour and tart, with dried cherries, pits, etc. Milky finish, I mean basically there’s milk and butter all over this stuff... strange. Thought it would be better, and I guess it’s ok, but not knocking my socks off.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 JMFG (1584) - Florida, USA - MAR 29, 2008
Tampa tasting, courtesy Degarth. Cloudy reddish-brown color with a thin, sparse soapy head. Very mild sour aroma, with some fruitiness and oakiness in the background. Surprising amount of sourness in the taste, backed by fruit, funk, and grain tones.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 BBB63 (5023) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - MAR 24, 2008
At the BBB63 comes to Tampa gathering, thanks to our host big Joe:
Muddy reddish brown hue with an okay head and some lace. The aroma has notes of cherry pie, wheat husks, herbal and flowery vapours and a hint of funky lacto and oak wood. The taste is twangy, sour and fruity with a grainy and flowery background. A bit medicinal and chalky after a while but none too bad. The mouth feel is lively and refreshing, chalky and oily finish. Overall a nice beer that with some improvement on mouth feel could be really good.
