COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Manhattan NW, a NW style sour ale that was, until recently, a secret. It’s a blend of Blond Quad aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels on 150 pounds of sour pie cherries for five months before additionally aging on apricot noyaux for three months. Aromas of cherries, Bourbon, sweet candy and hints of spice are noticed up front. Tart cherry skins and Maraschino cherries on the palate lead to a dance of rich cherry notes that are followed by slight Bourbon sweetness. Much like the process to make fission, the steps involved here are greater than the sum of their parts. What isn’t a secret? At 11.32% ABV, you’re going to need a designated driver

Bottle thanks to Will! Pours a cloudy orange with small off white head. The aroma is cherry skin, oak, and tart. Thin mouthfeel with strong cherry skin and oak with tart finish. Very good.

I obtained this bottle in a trade with a great trader @thebeerprophet. Brought this to a bottle share at Proof. Pours a hazy very dark peach color. Good amount of head on the first pour that dissipated fairly quickly. Second pour got more head than the first. Nice medium white collar. Aroma is very earthy/woody and sweet-tart cherry blend. Taste is amazing. Very similar to the aroma, with some of the caramel/wood coming out. Mouthfeel is viscous for a sour; like chewing an overripe marischino cherry. Nice carbonation despite the low head. Pretty thick body. So glad I traded for this to share with good people.

Bottle shared thanks to mverity! Pours a hazy golden orange with fluffy off-white head that dissipates to leave moderate lace. Aroma is lactic sourness, earthy musk, sweet cherries, and whiskey. Taste is funky sour awesomeness, wow. Odd but great, bubbly carbonation, lasting sweetness. Amazing, no idea at all it was that high of an abv.

My Bottom Line:
Spicy cherries and citrus pulp meet pediococcus funk along the way before settling into a dry and bubbly splash of acidity.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the endearing orange-y red.
-The spiciness is reminiscent of some Christmas-y treatments.
-Pedio is thankfully not sticking for the long run; it adds a touch of funk early on, but quickly dissipates.
-The acidity makes the alcohol a no-show.

Bottle.

Bottle share at the Kernel. Thanks to Paul for this one. Aroma is horsey, armpit, light tart cherry. Brown orange colour with persistent losse white head, with a light haze. Flavour is nice approachable tart, apple, cherry skin. Hides the alcohol really well. Tastes at most 7%. Light acidic notes in the finish, but well rounded.Very nice spritzy carbonation.

Ça sent le cowboy qui revient du gym, le trio des bactéries a travaillé fort. Des notes de rhubarbe, épices et biscuits graham se manifestent aussi, intéressant.

’11 bottle from John - thanks! Murky copper pour with a large froth of white foam. Bourbon, tart cherry, and sour in the aroma. Taste is semi-harsh bourbon with a thick, sugary maraschino cherry flavor into the middle before finishing into moderate sour and tart. Clean, lightly coating mouthfeel. The interaction between the bourbon and the cherries is bit harsh in some spots of the aroma but the cherry flavor is really well done. Enjoyable beer.

Project 2011 Pours a browned orange, almost light sepia. A few bubbles and some etch9ing of the surface. Brilliant clarity. Smells of alcohol, nougat, cherries, sour. Flavor is sour, with cherry, slightly sweet, some apricot, some maraschino. Medium bodied with a coating character and a moderately hi, but transient carb. Nice beer.

Sean, my buddy in TN sent me a bottle and then I went to Portland and bought 2 more! Enjoyed at 45F split 2-ways with the GF in stemmed glasses.

A - Head is fizzy and effervescent and fades quickly. it’s a murky / cloudy beer wit a few seeds and pieces floating around at the bottom. Blood red is probably too severe. More of a pink cherry color.

S - obviously, lots of cherry on the nose. There’s a sweetness that reminds me of a candied apple. I get lots of bourbon on the nose..very obviously there.

T - A very sweet beer, total candied cherries taste. Bourbon finish. Vanilla, coconut and oak obviously. Then there’s the floral hibiscus sweetness and honeysuckle sort of things going on. It’s insanely complex and very much a sweet and less boozy version of a classic manhattan.

M - Big, bubbly and bright

O - Not my favorite cascade beer but an A for complexity!
