COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Manhattan NW, a NW style sour ale that was, until recently, a secret. Itís a blend of Blond Quad aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels on 150 pounds of sour pie cherries for five months before additionally aging on apricot noyaux for three months. Aromas of cherries, Bourbon, sweet candy and hints of spice are noticed up front. Tart cherry skins and Maraschino cherries on the palate lead to a dance of rich cherry notes that are followed by slight Bourbon sweetness. Much like the process to make fission, the steps involved here are greater than the sum of their parts. What isnít a secret? At 11.32% ABV, youíre going to need a designated driver

Bottle shared at The Kernel, London - many thanks to Paul U. Pours hazy grapefruit pink with a foamy, white head. The nose has dry and funky berries, some cherries. Light to medium sweet flavor, mildly acetic, some cherry pit bitterness, light sour burn, tangy berries. Medium bodied with average, spritzy carbonation. Dry and tangy to finish with more vibrant cherries now. Juicy, lightly jammy. Really good. I found it more drinkable than some of Cascadeís other beastly sours.

Bottle care of Paul Unwin. Hazy murky amber, murky bown, white head. Nose is funky, farmyard, sugary, leather, vanilla, very light bourbon whisky, cherry. Mainly sweet but with some light malt vinegar sour . Taste is funky, sour, white sugar, full rich and sour. Strong white sugar sweetness and then vinegar sour. Soft sweet rich and full flavoured. Very good beer.

Bottle thanks to Paul Unwin. It pours hazy reddish-amber with a small beige head. The nose is sweet-sour, balsamic, bourbon, vanilla, toasted coconut, cherry skin, damp wood and leaf. The taste is sour, tangy, cherry, moderate acidity, mouth-puckering tartness, sherbet, red grape skin, parma violets, alcohol kick and residual sweetness with a tart finish. Medium body, prickly carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Strong, but rather tasty. Another good sour from Cascade.

Bottle at Paul tasting. My first cascade sour cheers Paul! Hazy pink/red pour with a small white head which quickly disappears. Nose has light sugar, touch of vinegar, lemon, moderate funk, toffee biscuit, vanilla and is a little sulfuric. Taste has an absolute bucket load of sugar in it - enough to make your teeth gritty. Big residual sweetness all around while lemon morange, lemon tart, and candy sugar come out to play. Booze is hidden masterfully. Solid but a bit too sweet and sugar forward for a sour

75cl bottle at the Kernel, Paul tasting. Thanks to Paul for this one. Pours a hazy pink with minimal head. Aromas are strong with big funky berries, tart pie cherries, peppery, fruity, mild alcohol, light barrel. Flavors are tart and cleanly acidic, pie cherry, medium acidity. A bit zesty in the finish. Very good albeit a tad sweet.

Bottle. Very nice looking opaque yellow copper beer. Aroma is most excellent: sweet concentrated fruits, some spices, strawberry, caramel. Taste is well-rounded and complex, nice soft bitter hop tones. Aftertaste is remarkably different, some pungent sourness and acidity. Most amazingly though, it doesnít taste in the slightest as if it has 11%+

Pour out of bottle at Sourfest 2013, clear reddish pour with thin off white head, aroma brought notes of cherry, slight booze, hints of herbal, grass, slight tart fruit, lemon notes, caramel as well, slightly odd. Taste is big sweet cherry, slight toffee, hints of herbal, spice, and lemony notes, finishing sour, slightly sweet. Something in here just didnít work for me.

Bottle at Darkness Day 2013. Nice sour cherry and bourbon nose. Taste is tart but not overly so. Really good stuff.

2011 Project
Tasted on 10/13/13 from a corked and caged 750mL bottle purchased at the Cascade Barrel House. Pours clear amber/orange with a thick beige head that recedes fairly quickly to no lace whatsoever. The nose is dominated by cherry and oak with some baking spice and a bit of almondy marzipan. The flavor is very sour with the cherries and citrus balanced by some oak, malt, and marzipan sweetness, and an interesting quad-like back end. The body is fairly full with sticky tannin, average, fizzy carbonation, and a very long cherry, oak, lightly spiced finish with the higher alcohol starting to show through a bit.
