Manhattan NW, a NW style sour ale that was, until recently, a secret. It’s a blend of Blond Quad aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels on 150 pounds of sour pie cherries for five months before additionally aging on apricot noyaux for three months. Aromas of cherries, Bourbon, sweet candy and hints of spice are noticed up front. Tart cherry skins and Maraschino cherries on the palate lead to a dance of rich cherry notes that are followed by slight Bourbon sweetness. Much like the process to make fission, the steps involved here are greater than the sum of their parts. What isn’t a secret? At 11.32% ABV, you’re going to need a designated driver

Sample at Sour Sunday 2015. Reddish/brown with a small head. Aroma of sour cherries, oak, apricot and some very light notes of bourbon. Similar taste. Vinous and with a sour finish. Well hidden alcohol in this one.

bottle shared at a tasting by tom10101, thanks bro! pours unclear dark golden orange with a small white cap, some retention and lacing. carribean rum and fragrant vanilla, tart if not sour cherries and/or miscellaneous fruits - red grapes perhaps; grapefruit puckering citric acidity - medium to high in fact. average carbonation, medium body, puckering sour citric and very astringent herbal-spicy finish. average american fruit sour, i.e. over the hill. o-k.

Pours a clear salmon pink with a small white rim for a head that doesn’t stay up for too long and leaves zero lacing. Nose is of cherries and just fruity overall. Taste is quite acid and alcohol shows a little (I would never have guess it was 11+%, though). A boozy fruity vinegar. Body is light to medium and carbonation moderate. Overall an OK concoction but I’m growing tired of the bracingly acid Cascade sours.

Bottle (750 ml) @ De Garde++ tasting.

Appearance: Slightly hazy pinkish-amber with a small white head.

Aroma: Cherries, brettanomyces, oak, bourbon, cough syrup, vanilla and almonds.

Taste: Quite acetic with sour cherries, brettanomyces, bourbon, oak and vanilla.

Palate: Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Dry puckering finish.

Overall: The aroma is super complex and really enticing, but the acetic presence is just too heavy bear and really hinder the drinkability. Alcohol is well hidden. Interesting.

Bottle shared by Marcus. Bottle gushed lightly, bright dark copper pour has tiny flakes. Smooth sour oak cherry aroma. Med minus body. Flavor is subtle boubon mixed with rather sour cherry. It’s just a tad sweet,but not enough to go sweet/tart. Not a trace of heat. Quite delicious.

Bottle from Capitol Beer & Tap Room. Pours reddish brown with tiny floaters and a tiny off-white head. There is an enticing apricot and cherry aroma followed by a deiicious complex flavor that includes cherry, candi sugar and bourbon.

Bottle at Mikkeller, thanks to Matt for this. In the sour room. Gorgeous clear ruby pour with creamy pink head. Aroma: jam, cherries, oak, fruit. Taste is big on fruit, with prominent tartness. It’s hard to believe this is as big as it is. Palate: medium+ body, slick texture, pleasant carbonation. Overall: It’s easy to forget how good Cascade can sometimes be. This is great.

Tap at Cascade. Pours bright red with off- white head. Aroma is cherries, burnt hair, smells like a hair salon, sweet. Taste is vanilla, cherries, light bodied, crisp, really awkward, a bunch if flavors that just do not work together, very contrasting. Overall, needs to get fine tuned.
