Manhattan NW, a NW style sour ale that was, until recently, a secret. Itís a blend of Blond Quad aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels on 150 pounds of sour pie cherries for five months before additionally aging on apricot noyaux for three months. Aromas of cherries, Bourbon, sweet candy and hints of spice are noticed up front. Tart cherry skins and Maraschino cherries on the palate lead to a dance of rich cherry notes that are followed by slight Bourbon sweetness. Much like the process to make fission, the steps involved here are greater than the sum of their parts. What isnít a secret? At 11.32% ABV, youíre going to need a designated driver

Poured from a 750ml bottle, thanks to Doug. Big berry, cherry, malty, toasted malts, bready. This is a solid beer.

Pours a red/orange color with a off white head. This just didnít do it for me. I just felt this didnít mix as well as it should.

(750ml bottle) clear ruby red, lasting fizzy white bubbles. Nose of very tart pie cherries, lacto and pedio, nice wet barrel, smells is incredible. Taste falls in a lesser category though, acetic, Chardonnay, wet wood, biting sourness, tart cherry, more grapey and white wine like than apricots, bourbon barrel is here too, alcoholic. A bit imbalanced but very neat. Fizzy carbonation, prickly palate, linger of alcohol and finally the apricot comes out a bit in the linger.

Bottle, shared. Pours ruddy brick red, a little hazy. Decent white head. Nose is big and boozy, cherry cordial, nuttiness, apricot, bourbon. Slick palate, vanilla-cherry compote. The souring and oak astringency help quell the almost cloying sweetness, but itís a bit of a challenge. A challenge, though, I quite enjoyed.

Bottle... Mostly clear burnt-orange ale with no head. The nose is fruity and tangy with a splash of red wine. Thereís also a grape SweetTarts component in the aroma. Full-bodied with tingly carbonation. Tangy, fruity, lightly tart flavor with a grape SweetTarts finish. Excellent brew. Bottle courtesy of landhoney!

750 ml bottle courtesy of OregonHopMonster. Thanks again, dude! The trade that I think Iíve finally covered.. But keeps giving in the cellar. Pours a well hazed copper orange hue, some richer berry reddish hues glow well. A gentle to medium haze in the body. Small frothy tannish red head atop dies to a loose ring, laces small. Carbonation driven, a bigger layer dies down quickly. Aromas offer lots of Bing cherries, tart and tannic, some vinegar presence, red wine and oak with firm bigger lactic twang and sourness. Lemon, yogurt, vinegar, and firm sour cherries, some raspberry touches. Red wine and tannic, a bit thinner and harsher than some recent Cascade offerings. The nose grows on me though, almost a light spiciness or cinnamon feel on the nose at times as it settles. Initial is a bit different, thinner and warmer in the body, a bit fuzzy. Firm lactic presence meets cherryskin, fruit, gentle raspberry. Subtle red wine, bigger lactic acidity with yogurt, lemon, sour cherries. A touch of acidity and a bit sweet and sticky up front. Middle is cherries, vanilla, yogurt, and oak. Decent to medium sourness. A touch underdone in the end. Some bready and sticky malts hang on just a touch. That bigger ABV obviously took a firmer, larger maltbill to produce. Backend is more tart, dry, lactic. Firm to good sourness, a bit tannic and woody back there. Some gentle warmth, fuzziness. This beer does lack complexity and finesse. Some of the other Cascade beers are just quite impressive.. But this one doesnít really take off for me. Some red grape, sweet and tart. Some dry tannic qualities, ABV warmth, and decent lactic twang as we finish up. Itís not harsh, itís never really acedic, but it is messy.. And itís not really complex. It doesnít flow. Itís too big ABV wise and that seems to take away focus from the sourness and lactic elements, oak synergy that shine. Ok overall. Definitely not my favorite Cascade beer and probably not a re-do like other cherry beers they do (Sang Noir especially!). Itís solid

Bottle generously shared by Seth. Reddish brown pour with a white head. Cherry and barrel aromas. Delicious cherry, stone fruits, and assorted berries blend seamlessly with rich caramel malts, vanilla, and oak notes. Complex with a superb mouthfeel. The ABV is totally hidden. Another stunner from the Cascade crew......

Bottle:   Fiery orange, very vibrant, moderate sudsy off-white frothy head, spotty lacing.   Soft alcohol on the nose.   Otherwise cherry and some slight berry notes.   Seems very bright.   Has a slight sour tinge, like a Sour Red/Brown.   Not as sour on the tongue, moreso a tartness.   Slightly dry, fruity, cherries.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Tart finish, unripened fruit/cherries, lingering dryness.   Really good stuff, but $30 good?
