Manhattan NW, a NW style sour ale that was, until recently, a secret. It’s a blend of Blond Quad aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels on 150 pounds of sour pie cherries for five months before additionally aging on apricot noyaux for three months. Aromas of cherries, Bourbon, sweet candy and hints of spice are noticed up front. Tart cherry skins and Maraschino cherries on the palate lead to a dance of rich cherry notes that are followed by slight Bourbon sweetness. Much like the process to make fission, the steps involved here are greater than the sum of their parts. What isn’t a secret? At 11.32% ABV, you’re going to need a designated driver

Sample at the Barrel House. Pours a clear Rosé wine color with a thin white head that diminishes quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of cherries, oak and vanilla. Full-bodied with a midlly boozy character and flavors of tart cherries, caramel malt, Hawaiian Punch and yeast. The finish is lightly sour with a cherry and yeast aftertaste. Comes perilously close to becoming a mess but it works for me, enjoyable beer.

Fresh cherries, bourbon, hearty Cascade yeast. Sourness bites after each sip, imparting black cherries and boozy fruits. A bit hot for a Cascade sour, but man, this is good.

Pinkish-red pour with a white head. Big cherry aroma. Kind of a cherry pie and spice thing going on. Lemon, caramel, and brown sugar. Some vanilla, oak, and a touch of fruit punch sweetness. The flavor is a bit sweet as well with lots of cherry and fruit punch. Mild spice notes, caramel, sugar, and vanilla. Some lactic sourness and lemon notes, oak, and a hint of grass.

Red pour, pinkish head. Cherries, sugar, oak, light tannins, hints of stone fruit, sweet up front and the middle, overripe fruit and very faint sourness that dances in between the sweet flavors.

8 oz on tap at the barrel house. A: Fruit punch red with a thin white lacing. Not much to say in the way of legs. N: Lots of candied cherries, almost to the point of being Jolly Rancher ’flavored’. Hints of peach and apricot with a lot more of the sugars coming out. Doesn’t smell particularly sour. I get a little bit of vanilla in th bottom of this, but damn, it is absolutely dominated by sweet cherries. T: Really sweet. There’s a moderate sourness here, but it’s mostly just sweet and acidic. M: Plenty of alcohol. There’s a heft and an oiliness to this which is slightly off putting. I really have no idea how to grade this. It’s a big huge beer, so it should be heavier. O: Hawaiian fruit punch with vodka. That’s my serious description of this. It’s absolutely a confection which you should have with dessert.
