Fatty Appleton, a colourful brewery worker, was known for his ability to carry 2 Firkin barrels under his arms (yes, they’re known as Firkins). It’s a skill that would work as ’crowd control’ when things got out of hand at the local. Deep and rich in colour, Stout has a slightly nutty roasted flavour and chocolate characteristics, with a smooth and creamy body and pleasantly bitter after-taste. Fatty Appleton would approve!

As a stout fan this is definitely one for fellow admirers. Maybe a little too heavy to drink all night but thats what I look for in a good stout, it’s a great starter. Pours and sits very nicely in the glass and has a flavour that lingers nicely. If you dig a smooth yet mildly sweet stout this will satisfy.

Muddy appearance, muddy texture, mud & metho taste. Cheap instant coffee aromas. No, really, it was pretty unenjoyable for mine, and that was after i’d had a couple. Worst Aussie stout i’ve tasted.

New label, but same old beer. Not that it’s bad, it’s just not a great example of this type of beer. Nearly jet black with virtually no head. If you wait a few seconds, the "virtually" becomes redundant. The aroma is where it’s all at with this one: roasted coffee and malt, some chocolate and a bit of earth. The flavour is disappointingly sweet and seemingly unbalanced. The palate is pretty weak, but gains a point for the roasty aftertaste. Plenty of room for this to be made into a better beer (not that I’d know how to do it!!!)

375 ml bottle. Pitch black with a thick brown head. Massive aroma of milk chocolate, malted milk, and a bit of earthiness. Roasty, but not burnt. Nice creamy texture and awesome chocolate malt flavour. Roasty finish with some lingering bitterness.

Pours jet black with a thick brown head, average retention. Very smokey burnt aroma. Mouthfull is medium but flavour still reasonably full, with some nice roasty bitterness. A little metallic and dirty in the finish, but pretty solid overall, very much in line with invalid stout.

Bottle. Got this one from motelpogo in Sydney in an on the street trade! Saved for a few months and it is time. Pours nice and dark with a ruby black color and a tan head. Should I spell color with a "u" since this is an Aussie beer? Cool bottle, except that it is a twister. Nice roasted coffee quality. Decent brew with a medium body and a roasted malt flavor and nose. Thanks go out to duff and motelpogo!

Draught at Irish Murphy, Ballarat. Black, average beige head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Light-medium bodied with some molasses and somewhat raw mouthfeel. Short grassy finish. The Export stout felt more mature and refined

Bottled (at AIBA 2005). Very black. Tarry licorice aroma. Sweet and rich on coffee. The coffee just lingers on, passing the somewhat syrupy mouthfeel into the finish where it overpowers the bitterness. One dimensional, and perhaps with simplistic malt character, but after 28 hours on airplanes and umpteen beers at the festival I sure do appreciate the coffee in this beer :-)

Very dark brown w/ frothy brown foam. Mildly roasty w/ a slight chocolate & coffee character. Thin, somewhat fizzy feel. Flavour is typical--sweet, light roastiness, chocolate, coffee, mild hops--if not somewhat bland.
