Fatty Appleton, a colourful brewery worker, was known for his ability to carry 2 Firkin barrels under his arms (yes, they’re known as Firkins). It’s a skill that would work as ’crowd control’ when things got out of hand at the local. Deep and rich in colour, Stout has a slightly nutty roasted flavour and chocolate characteristics, with a smooth and creamy body and pleasantly bitter after-taste. Fatty Appleton would approve!

UPDATED: JAN 26, 2012 Good effort. Plenty of primary flavours (ie chocolate and roast) and a nice choc orange tang as well. No worries drinking this in hot weather too.

Every week I passed this in the back of the bottleshop fridge and never thought to grab it ( maybe the bland brown label reminiscent of the fifties ). Glad I finally grabbed one, this beer deserves a little more ’air’ time than it’s shorter, nerdier brothers Cascade Premium and Light. Poured an opaque black, with a mousse brown head that slowly forms a solid pad. Aroma is like freshly brewed coffee, with dark chocolate mixed in for sweetness. Flavour is sweet and biscuity in the front , heavily roasted in the back and mocha balanced in the middle. Became slightly cloying towards the end of the glass, to be it’s only down point. This Foreign Extra Stout deserves more advertising and respect, as it is a very good example of the old styles quickly swept under the counter, by the inoffensive bland macro-brewed ’lagers’.

I fine black black beer. Milky chocolate. Good be better though if removed some of the sweetness.

2003 bottle from Mutant (Thanks!). Pours well enough, dark brown with some lighter magenta/red tinges. Clear, not bottle conditioned. Small light tan colored head. Aroma of sweet syrupy caramel, rich toffee and tons of sweet oats. Flavor is very oaty, chewy/syrupy and quite sweet. Like creamy oatmeal with lots of brown sugar. Hops are not terribly apparent, maybe some bitterness on the finish. Not overly complex, though, and it does get a bit sweet. Lots of milk chocolate and caramel. Yeast apparent on the finish as well. Interesting, but I’d like more bitterness and complexity.

Bottle: Pours black with a big solid tan head that lasts well. Little lacing. Aroma of bitter chocolate and coffee with a tiny bit of yeast (vegemite) and hops. Tastes great!! Very drinkable dark chocolate and black coffee although slightly grainy. Good bitterness that leaves you wanting more, however, it was somewhat thin with an astringent aftertaste. Nice beer.

Holy crap - where did this come from? I know I’ve had this before at some stage but I don’t remember it being this good. Black as black - completely opaque. Reasonable tan head. Seemingly low carbonation on the pour and open but some fizziness in the mouth. Amazing aroma - smooth malted milk, caramel, chocolate marshmallows, coffee with none of that graininess of a lot of stouts. Kinda like one of those stupid caramel-flavoured coffee things only in beer (and delicious). Certainly doesn’t taste as good as it smells but is nice nonetheless. More marshmallows and a creamy yet thinnish mouthfeel with a roasty finish and not too much hop. Really good.

Dark, sweet and sour aroma, like stale coffee and fresh apple cider. medium bodied with some acidity, malty and roasted then drying out. Yep, Stout.
