Fatty Appleton, a colourful brewery worker, was known for his ability to carry 2 Firkin barrels under his arms (yes, they’re known as Firkins). It’s a skill that would work as ’crowd control’ when things got out of hand at the local. Deep and rich in colour, Stout has a slightly nutty roasted flavour and chocolate characteristics, with a smooth and creamy body and pleasantly bitter after-taste. Fatty Appleton would approve!

Not a bad attempt for the aussies. Mildly burn taste, a darkish colour and a bit heavy on the fizz. It's a bit mild (full-bodied is a joke!) for true stout and after the first couple of mouthfuls I forgot it was! Not bad for a mass produced effort.

I thought the head lasted longer than most of the other stouts I have been trying these winter months. The body was medium and more bitter than recently tasted stouts which I thought was good.An alright stout but I will keep on searching.

A bit disappointing compared to other Australian stouts. It has an oily liquorice mouthfeel and often has an unwanted tang that seems to come from the brewing process. The head often fails.

Not too bad really. Tastes like coffee, but sort of sweetish coffee.

Seems OK to me as a relatively new convert to stouts, but nothing special. Strong roasted barley flavour and lots of coffee. The head disintegrates and the fizz is a bit too much - also the bitter aftertaste is a little too sharp for a good stout I think.

Without doubt the worst Aussie Stout. Way to watery and uneventful. More a ’bock’ or some shit, or welcome back to crap stoutsville. Me and Bardie’s homebrew kicks this one’s arse. Oh, and I have to warn grant60 that the phrase ’good stuff like swan’ defeats its own purpose. Peace.

Opaque brown with a smallish short lasting mid-tan head. Medium strong roasted malt and instant coffee aroma. Some fainter fruity sweet malt on glass swirl. Medium thin body, especially for a stout. Insufficient bitter to balance the predominant roasted sweetish malt and coffee flavours. Light bitter finish and aftertaste. Ok but lacks the overall smoothness and balance found in a good stout.

Has the appearance of a lighter stout, just dark brown, not the black hole effect of a real full bodied stout. Weak liquorice flavour can be tasted above the mediocre roast malt flavours. Light bodied, not nearly enough flavour to get your tastebuds jumping. Another Cascade let down.

Ink black, beige head. Moderate roast aroma. Sweetish, sugary flavour with a touch of roast malt. Not bad, probably just as good as Coopers Best Extra Stout.
