Fatty Appleton, a colourful brewery worker, was known for his ability to carry 2 Firkin barrels under his arms (yes, they’re known as Firkins). It’s a skill that would work as ’crowd control’ when things got out of hand at the local. Deep and rich in colour, Stout has a slightly nutty roasted flavour and chocolate characteristics, with a smooth and creamy body and pleasantly bitter after-taste. Fatty Appleton would approve!

Very mild for a foreign stout. Flavours of roasted malt, nutty, a little chocolate sweetness, but all quite thin and fleeting. Nothing dominates the palate and the aroma is quite subdued.

Pours black with a thin, but long-lasting creamy, brown head that is excellent in appearance. The aroma is of coffee and roasted malt with flavour also being of roasted malt with a mild bitterness that is short lasting on the palate. This stout is OK, but appearances can be deceptive and it is lacking in complexity.

375ml bottle into pint glass. Chocolatey boozy nose. Black beer with no light penetration, tan head. Quite a lot of carbonation. Light bodied, first taste is spritzy and bitter then milk chocolate. Finish is lingering dark chocolate/cocoa. Really nice. Australia has some great stouts but no-one seems to drink them.

From bottle in Xiamen, China. Pours black with a small head. No real lacing. Aroma is coffee and roasted malts. Taste is coffee, roasted malts, almost smoky, a little sweet, and more bitter. Bitter finish. Medium mouthfeel.

This beer hits and misses in equal measure. It smells and tastes lovely with toffee and dark chocolate being most prominent and a pleasant bitterness with a little coffee flavour at the end. It pours like cola, a lovely near black colour with a dark tan head that fades almost instantly. It had way too much carbonation however and it feels like lager in the mouth.
