Bottle - gift from my friend Vince. It was from his beer of the month club. Dark, cola colored brown with a foamy tan head. Aroma is cocoa, chocolate covered nuts, dark bread and caramel. Taste is big caramel, chocolate, light cocoa, soft nuttiness, dark bread and toasted grains. Body is medium with a smooth, foamy carbonation. Ends with more chocolate, powdery cocoa, caramel toasted malt, dark bread grains and roasted nuts.

Beer of the month club selection. Looks good. Dark brown with just off-white head. Bit of a malty nose although not strong or clearly malty. I bit of cocoa. A burnt roasted malt flavor, dry. Light sweetness. The burnt profile is throwing me a bit. Palate is medium.

From notes. First reviewed 1/14/2011. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass. This pours a transparent walnut color with a ruby tint throughout. A brisk, foamy eggshell head forms with an aggressive pour, lingering for a minute before fading to a film. No real lacing. The smell contains toasted malt, softly bitter nuts, lightly spiced and earthy hops. The start of the flavor is some soft hazelnut and lightly toasted malt. Earthy hops add a touch of bitterness while there is some brown sugar in here as well. The flavor lingers on the bitter side, with the hop flavor developing further and adding an earthy flavor. The finish is lightly bitter. It has a lightly creamy nature, and the carbonation is on the lighter side of medium. Medium body. I didn’t get enough complexity here to warrant another tasting.

Brownish red and just about opaque. Malt aroma can’t discern anything else. Flavor is nice. Toasty caramel malt flavor. Sweet with no hop characteristics. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
