2.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap @C&S brewery. Not looking like a traditional czech pils (too bitter and dry), but still a good kiwi pils

This would probably have a totally different appreciation if it wasn’t called a Pilsener. To the best of my knowledge, a "Pilsener " has become a style after a certain lager produced in a certain area that everyone knows about. It has a clear profile of flavour and appearance that sets the tone. Making it too hoppy will be as preposterous as calling dark lagers "Black Pilsners". This beer was just way too hoppy and not a partricularly pleasant hoppines, nor the bitterness. Everything else was smothered by this audacious addition. I brought a couple of Germans to this brewery the other day. Glad we just missed the Pilsner and I gave them the excellent Milk Stout.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap @ Cassels. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. The aroma has slight notes of grain, some honey, slight fruits. Clear, golden coloured beer with a white head. The beer is full of taste, citric hoppiness.Goes down easy. Light bodied. Nice.

This is great Pilsner. When the going gets tough the tough get going. Petanque, yachting, whatever, it’s European, it’s delicious, and it’s right now.

2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle 16/1/2011. Nice bottle with woodcut print label. Flip top lid.
Aroma of very sweet malt and a bit of a diacetyl followed up with something floral. Got more and more diacetyl the more I thought about it. Golden in the glass with a fine white head.
Big clash of flavours to taste. Sweet at first which changes to bitterness then back to sweet but this time corn corn corn. Lots of sweetcorn. Mouthfeel a bit chalky with some slickness and a bit mouth coating. A German friend of mines had told me it wasn’t a pilsner as he knew them and I’d have to agree.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This was tasted some four months after my esteemed colleague Snuffla and must have been different brew as I got no hint of diacetyl, just a flourish of hops, honey, resin, lemon curd, passionfruit and grass. It is more overt than traditional Pilsners. Just a small note of disappointment that the head barely fluffed up and was gone in seconds.
However, where it lacks on appearance, it gains on flavour. The bitterness creeps in and makes itself known as a lush, tangy citrus and resinous slap. It has surprising mouthfeel considering the lack of carbonation to the eye. This is a very good thing as it adds an additional dimension. It has a long, lingering finish that is a hallmark of excellent beer. I’d happily go back for seconds, thirds probably if it weren’t for the ESB that this brewer produces. God, I could hump that ESB.
