UPDATED: FEB 7, 2003 Tastes like the cork or something. There's a sweetness in here that just doesn't work at all, it's cloying, but overpowered by a mouth-puckering something else (I'm not sure). This flat out blows, and I will not respect other ratings while trashing this one. Seven bucks for 25 oz? Gag.

UPDATED: MAR 20, 2003 Feb 02: Nice cloudy, hay or cider-colored body; little head. Aroma complex with hay, yeast, apples, and bananas, and delicate as the flavors that follow. Taste very malty, slightly alcoholic and baked/candied-fruit like. Good medium body and finish. I didn't find this as cloyingly sweet as some have; this is I believe my first of the style and a winner.

Mar 03: After a year and half a dozen more bieres des gardes, this seems a little weak, especially in the finish, and a little simply sweet. Still excellent, still one of my favorite styles. Vive la France!

Not overly impressive. I just didn’t find much there. Some yeast and hay flavors but not a whole lot there overall. Not bad but I was expecting more from my first biere de garde.

I really like the biere de garde style. Drinking it makes me feel like it is summer even though it is February and cold. This is a very good example of the style, it is like a lager or pilsener but a little different. Extra malty and yeasty, and highly carbonated. This beer is extremely refreshing and very well made.

Quite pleasant, nice color and attractive appearance. Nice body and well balanced showing unique malt and hop characteristics. Some residual sweetness. Overall a well made beer.

Gorgeous appearance with a straw colored body, thick frothy head and flakes of spent yeast riding the bubbles like a snow globe that’s been shaken violently. Nice farmy aroma of yeast, hay and grapes. Medium body despite the effervescence. Hoppy and fresh with loads of winey fruits and some slick honey sugarness. Gets thicker and sweeter once warm, where the body loses some grip but the malts never lose their hold. Well balanced and altogether a solid example of the style.

Ahhh, nice aroma. Let it breathe a while and you get maple syrup notes. Nice head on golden body.......and then, wow!! this stuff is so friggin disgusting. This has got to be the sweetest golden bodied beer in the world. The sickeningly thick sweetness would just linger and finish longer than a Bergman movie. I could barely choke this stuff down. No light bodied beer needs to be this sweet. AWFUL!

Delicious and smooth. Alot of citrus and herbal nose. Good accompaniment to a pasta dish with shellfish.

Herbal/malty aroma. Rather hefty carbonation combined with a generous fluffy head. Bright yellow/golden color, of course. Filtered. Flavor is lightly fruity, with some herbal and vanilla notes. Very smooth palate, but still somewhat full-bodied beer. Not much bitterness to speak of, hops seem very subdued. Interestingly different brew. Very European tasting.
